Th350 and 3 spd column length

I have a 3 spd on the column behind my 350 right now, I believe it's a muncie. I'm just scoping out future trans possibilities on a really tight budget. I'd like to not have to get the driveshaft shortened or lengthened, so if these two tranny's are the same size it would work perfect.

Which two transmissions are you talking about? You mentioned only one. Your present 3 speed should be about 21" from the bellhousing face to the rear seal. Just take a tape measure with you when you go shopping.

Re: Th350 and 3 spd column length

ah sorry I mentioned the th350 in the title but forgot it in the post, it's not actually a th350 that I'm looking for, but I've confirmed that it's the same size as the one I'm looking for so I figured more people would know about it than the one I want, which is an a833. It was mostly a mopar tranny but it was used from 80-87 or so in chevy diesels, its an overdrive 4spd manual.

Re: Th350 and 3 spd column length

I looked for an A833 for about a year before I gave up and settled for a T5. You are in luck (assuming you can find one), because the A833 is the same length and has the same output spline as your 3 speed.

In case you didn't already know, the A833 was made with two different bolt patterns. One is the same as a normal Chevy and will bolt to the bellhousing you have now. The other is a hybrid pattern that is half Chevy and half Mopar. If you get one of those, you must also get the bellhousing that goes with it. The bellhousing is easy to identify because it has 6 bolt holes.

Thanks Ray, from what I've heard they're fairly easy to find, maybe not I guess we'll see. Were some of these "hybrid" trannys found in the dodge pickups too?

Re: Th350 and 3 spd column length

No, the Dodge transmissions have the normal Mopar 4 speed bolt pattern, which is different from either of the Chevy patterns. The input shaft is longer too. I have read that there is supposed to be an adapter plate that will let you bolt the Dodge version to a Chevy bellhousing, but I haven't been able to find anyone who knows about it.

On the hybrid pattern, the 2 left hand holes are in the Mopar location and the right hand holes are the same as Chevy. The bellhousing for this one has the 4 normal Chevy holes plus the 2 Mopar holes on the left side. You will know it when you see it.

Btw, when I was looking for an A-833 I was able to find them, but not within driving distance, and I didn't want to buy one without inspecting it first.
