TH400 driveshaft not going all the way in

My friend took out his transmission (TH400) to install a new fluid pump, and then re-attached it to his truck. He is having trouble inserting the drive-shaft all the way. He says it won't insert fully, and has tried lubing it and twisting it, but it won't go all the way in.

Have any ideas?

wow, you are so halarious. You should be a comedian on AGT.

Stock driveshaft to my understanding. See this thread for the context: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...86#post4300086

Look for twisted splines, both on the shaft and inside the yoke. It's not common, but it can happen. You may have to pull the tail housing to fully inspect the shaft.

Re: TH400 driveshaft not going all the way in

Does the end of the output shaft have a threaded hole? If it does the splines on the output shaft are NOT machined all the way because it came with a bolt on yoke.

If this is your problem changing the output shaft with a fully splined one whould be the correct fix.

Also, be aware that your 64 did not come with a 400 turbo, & that trans is about 3/4 " longer than the old Power glide. If you are using a slipyolk(non bolt on) ,you need 3/4" minimum to 1" max on the slide(check with the weight on the wheels). best of fun, crazyAl
