60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

Over the past several weeks we've research the living hell out of the old codes for the GMc interior Silver Fawn Metallic. The only true code we could find was a Dupont Number, which crosses over to a DIAMONT brand Paint WA7134 it's so close that I will assume the difference is due to having the paint on the glove box 49 years old and has faded a small bit.

What do you think? The backside of the glove box is painted on 50% to compare

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

one other question.. looks to be gloss, I wonder if stock was gloss, or a satin?
if so I wonder if a little flattener would make it just right.

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

factory was a satin color on the silver and the gold or fawn on every truck I have seen or owned, If you want it less glossy you can just over reduce the final coat of paint usually 20% depending on the paing mfg and it will dull the finish quite a bit, or get satin clear if your using base/clear

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

Yes that color is the closest we man make it to the OEM silver, AND I do relize it a touch too glossy, but I think I want a slightly more glossy finish this time around.

Glad to help with the number.

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

for some reason I really like the stock interior colors in these trucks, most of the ones that continue the body color into the interior look like too much, not enough contrast.
there was one with a white interior I liked, but I think even on the radical truck I am building I will go with the stock silver/charcoal black dash.

any line on the charcoal-black yet?

I agree. I am glad to see the trend back to the original interior colors. Most interiors are repainted the wrong color (body color or black) because it was the easiest thing to do.

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

concur - my vote for original colors (or anything close to them). For some strange reason, I always thought "fawn" was the more gold interior color and that silver was just "silver". But, obviously, I'm color blind. Thanks for posting, good thread. And your interior looks great! (I hope I'm not color blind!)

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

after speaking with a few friends from Jolly's 60-66 GMC club, I've decided to tone down the gloss a bit, no problem we'll just rough up what we painted and apply a semi-gloss clear. I'm trying to be as OEM as Possible within the sphere and adding a few more moderen safety issues, Seat Belts, P/S, Oil/Water/Amp gauges (I NEVER like idiot lights) etc. other than know the seatbelts are in (behind seat when not in use)

Now that we've got the right shade of silver color, make a big differance.

That looks great jake! I agree with using factory colors in the cab. When/if I rebuild my truck I will be doing the same thing.

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

It may not be "correct" but I love the way it looks as you have painted it. These may have been a satin finish when new, but I've never seen one that wasn't "flat", and other than being a shade off looked like the factory job came out of a spray can. I realize a restorer has a different viewpoint, but I think that matching color with gloss on it looks like what the factory "could have offered" if they built a show truck or wanted it to look a little less industrial.

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

One thing I am wondering about is, in my truck it had a greyish black satin finish that was great because there is no glare in the windshield. Are the darker colors and the finish the key?

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

Dino, The top of the dask is the darker grey color (antiglare) I left mine a touch metallica nd a bit darler becasue it match the grey of the seat 99% perfect. See pic..

I did that on top od the dash

PPG has direct crossovers from ditzler......I found them at the autocolor library and then went to my local ppg dealer........they mix the interior color flat by adding more reducer.

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

They used lacquer originally on the interior IIRC, which required buffing to shine, which also faded/dulled over time. Any modern paint will be shinier than OE, but looks better IMO.

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

The dashes were somewhat dull from the factory to help cut down on glare from the sun. Imagine super high gloss and a big back window, (now where did I put my sunglasses)

Hey jocko, I agree with you, the fawn has the gold tint and silver is just that. Ofcourse we all see colors a little different and light has alot to do with it too.

Re: 60-66 GMC Interior Silver Color

I found this from another forum

Medium Fawn: 60% gloss
DuPont: #9171-L
Ditzler: #DL-22571
Rinshed-Mason: #65B84

Dark Fawn: 0% Gloss
DuPont: #9202-L
Ditzler: #DIA 22568

Light Fawn: 60% gloss
DuPont: #9170-L
Ditzler: #DL22569

Medium Saddle: 60% gloss
DuPont: #4626-L
Ditzler: #DL-22570
Rinshed-Mason: #65B83

Dark Saddle: 0% Gloss
DuPont: #9199-L
Ditzler: #DIA-13010

The Saddles are from 1965 and the Fawns are the same for 1965 and 1966.

In 1966, the interior was two colors, with the Medium Fawn or Dark Fawn on the dash panel & steering column, with Light Fawn on all other interior surfaces.
