State inspections...
Went to renew my inspection here in East Texas. An area that doesnt do emissions test. My truck failed because I dont have a catylitic converter on my truck. WTH.... Went down the street and they didnt even look to see if I had one. So I still got it inspected and she passed at the second place but it should have passed at the first one. What a waste of an hour.

Re: State inspections...
Interesting considering the fact that no vehicles were required to have converters in '70, if any even did have them then.
I'd say the place you took it to is clueless and steer clear from now on. |

Re: State inspections...
I would have to question the first place and ask them where in the world does a 1970 truck require a converter since they were not mandated till 1974ish.....

Re: State inspections...
Did they charge for that failed inspection? Stand in the center of their chest telling them to show you where a 1970 GMC is required to have a Cat. Catalytics were not required on 1/2 ton trucks until 1978 (States varied but all by 1978 had Cats) and trucks over 8500 GVW didn't require Cats until 1986. There has to be a agency in TX that controls who and how inspections get done, I would complain.

Re: State inspections...
Thats what I asked them. I thought it was 1977, but still. I asked the tech and he said its what the computer says and his boss was sticking to it. Hell he already had the sticker ready to go on the truck.
No they didnt charge me for it. The owner was just being a dick. I was actually gonna take my truck there to get the ac that I installed charged up but not now.

Re: State inspections...
We used to have emissions testing in the twin cities but it cost to much to hire a bunch of people that can,t pump there own gas. Thanks to are former governor Jesse Ventura that crap was shut down.

Re: State inspections...
This political statement has nothing to do with a cat or no cat on our trucks. I hope it is deleted as it does not belong on this board.

Re: State inspections...
He actually crawled under the truck to look for one. Hello like the red cherry bombs stick out right behind the cab under my flat bed should have been a clue.

Re: State inspections...
Since unleaded fuel was not even generally available until '73, although there was a brief period of "low lead" fuel before that, which would still fry a cat. Anyway, not even special emissions California requires a Smog on a '75 or older anything, car or truck. I think the first emission devices were EGRs in '69, airpumps started in '73 and cats started in '75 and I think had to be on all passenger cars in '76.

Re: State inspections...
Please report this shop, it may not do you any good at the moment but this kind of behavior can not be tolerated. With all the rules and regulations being imposed on our way of life {hobby?} we must stand up and take action, some poor soul may go to that shop and when failed spend hard earned $$ having a cat installed on a vehicle that does not require one.

Re: State inspections...
In Texas you can register your truck as a classic and you dont need a inspection...

Re: State inspections...
Actually all vehicles with Cats are also required to have nozzle restrictors in the fuel filler. So if you are going to add a cat you need to add that as well, so you don't accidently put leaded fuel (larger diameter nozzle) in your car, if you should happen to stop at a gas station that has leaded gas, of course that gas station would need to be at an airport, or maybe a boat dock but still.

Re: State inspections...
Yeah but registering it as a classic has driving limitations on it doesnt it or is that just antique? I remember checking into it last year but cant remember what it was. One would not let it be my daily driver.
Ill see what I can do to report it.
