Engine Shopping
Well, I'm not too proud of this, but I am in the market for a new motor. I just bought a k20 with a 350 and sm465 the other week and havent gotten to look at it much because I'm at school. Drove it up to my mechanic to get it inspected and to get a good professional opinion and...its been running on 7 cylinders, has a burnt valve and messed up rings. I knew something was wrong cuz it was droppin a lot of oil but.... SO now I'm in the market for a new crate engine. I want to stick with a 350 and I'm wondering which one you all would get. I'm looking at the GM and Edelbrock crate engines. Any other suggestions on what engine you would put in? Thanks

Re: Engine Shopping
What about GM part number 10067353? Its only 30 less hp and its got 24 more ftlbs of torque, and its a couple hundred bucks cheaper? Whats the drawback besides less hp? I plan on using my trucks as an everyday driver, occasional hauler, and hunting rig. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Engine Shopping
Is your choice based on gas mileage or performance? Will you ever tow or is this strictly a daily driver? Some 350s are designed for better gas mileage. I always prefer a new GM engine over a rebuild - less chance of botched rebuild. Can you reuse your intake, carb, etc.? - check that before you buy a new engine - not all parts work on all engines (e.g. serpentine vs. old style multiple belts.)

Re: Engine Shopping
Bought one of those, hate it, would not buy it again. Either step up and get one with a little more hp and good heads, or just stick with the normal old stock engine.
Have been told by numerous mechanics after dropping this engine in, it just is not a well rounded motor. Granted we put it in a truck with TBI, but even if we switched it over to carb it would not change the fact that it has sorry heads and has issues making vacuum. I'm a bitter old man though, so take it with a lump of salt.

Jegs has it for $1500 + $159 shipping with a free HEI distributor. That's a good price. Summit has it for the same price when you consider shipping, but no free distributor. http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance...67353/10002/-1 Slonaker |

Re: Engine Shopping
I am still pondering yanking all the TBI off mine and going carb and a vacuum dist. The constant back firing has me peeved off right now though, not sure what's causing that. Sounds like a hamster inside my exhaust pipe with a ballpeen hammer trying to make music.
Again, I'm just a bit bitter, so take my thoughts with that in mind.

Re: Engine Shopping
Could you bore it out and rebuild for less than a crate?
