Door latch problems (door slamming)
Having a problem getting my doors to latch without slamming.
1. I've replaced the hinge pins and bushings. 2. Removed the strike and alignment wedge, centered the door in the opening using the hinges. 3. Added the alignment wedge to lift the door slightly. Like the book says. 4. Moved the strike in every direction and have the best possible location, I think. 5. Lubed everything. After all of that it only improved slightly. Is it a sloppy latch? Do I need to replace the latch? Any suggestions? I'm not expecting it to close like a new truck, but I'll break some glass someday doing this. |

Re: Door latch problems (door slamming)
You say you lubed everything. Good. What about the little plastic part on the striker plate backside? Only reason i ask about that, is because i just had to do that to mine yesterday. Its a little plastic wedge lookin thing. It rides on a pin with a spring behind it. Once i oiled it, my door shut alot better.Hope this helps

Re: Door latch problems (door slamming)
Is the weather strip brand new - took mine some time to compress enough to latch like it used too. By the way are you using the original wedges or did you find new ones somewhere. Mine are grooved and I can not find a supplier for them.

Re: Door latch problems (door slamming)
Different truck, but I had new weatherstripping put in on my 1987 K20 and I had to slam the doors to get them to shut, but it got better once the weatherstripping compressed....it did take some time unfortunately.

Re: Door latch problems (door slamming)
The weather strip is about a year old.
The wedges are the originals. When the latch is in the closed position (with the door open) I can rock it back and forth. Should this play be there? |

Re: Door latch problems (door slamming)
Wanted to give a final update to this problem.
I next replaced the door latches and that improved the situation greatly. I still had some problems and narrowed it down to when I was shutting the door with the inside handle. Next I replaced the inside door control. This finished the repair. Both parts had too much wear and were very sloppy. I could lock the door handle with the door open and never understood this. The parts were wore so much they overlapped. So, a combination of door latch and door control replacement made a world of difference. I'm no longer slamming my door multiple times until it latches! |

Re: Door latch problems (door slamming)
I also have the same problem, I even took the weather stripping off and shuts the same. I see that maybe the door latches might have something to do with it, can anyone suggest where to buy the best latches and other hardware that might be needed. I dont want cheap stuff, I want good quality parts. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Door latch problems (door slamming)
I used parts from http://www.classicparts.com/
Both items seem to be well made. |

It should be two clicks.

Re: Door latch problems (door slamming)
Yes, move it out until you get the second click and then move it back in until the door is flush. once you go too far, you'll only get the one click.
This reminds me to work on my doors. I originally posted this for my last truck (a 62). I now have a 60 that has the same issues. These old latches really are not up to what we expect with new cars! |
