bent rear cross member

I know over the yrs it has been discussed but my memory is going bad and I cannot find answer in a search. What is the explaination for the bend in the rear cross member on our frames? Almost always kinked near the middle top. (lighter weight member furthest back)

Do I need to straighten this to make it right?
