Re: Need pictures of ....
Kind of hard to get a picture of, they are just sandwiched between the bearing and the base of the helical cut gear. Does that make sense?

Gotcha! I was thinking pinion depth, not angle.

Re: Need pictures of ....
Do you have any pictures of your shims installed? I just want to make sure I put them in the correct way......

Re: Need pictures of ....
They go between the rear-end housing 'pad' & the truck arm 'pad'. Which direction depends on which way you're trying to go. Mine are installed to yield 3° positive pinion angle.
The 1st pic is a 3/4 view from the front of the housing (driver side). 2nd pic is a 3/4 view from behind the housing (again driver side). Also note a little subliminal PB endorsement ....

Re: Need pictures of ....
I dont want to hi-jack Rob's thread, but would like to add more discussion to this topic.
When setting the pinion angle on a leaf spring rear, you allow for flex in the leafs so that the pinion angle matches the tranny angle while under load. Since our trucks use trailing arms and dont flex (much), are you guys allowing for any extra degrees or are you matching your pinion angle equal and opposite of the tranny angle? I almost bought those shims from stock car products, but had my cpp drop block machined so my pinion angle is the same angle as my tranny instead. Last edited by dznucks; 01-06-2011 at 11:15 AM. |

Re: Need pictures of ....
I haven't gotten the drivetrain in yet but my plan is to adjust the height @ the trans x-member if needed.

Roger that. I also notices that you flipped the trailing arm mounting brackets on your ECE crossmember. How much does that help on the pinion angle?

But, my 68 had the same basic set-up (but the rear clip was in the OE location), & I know my pinion was not optimum w/the factory orientation (it was driveable w/o vibration using a 1:1 final drive ratio, but not optimum). Since this truck is getting OD, I wanted to ensure the angles are correct because I can't stand driveline vibration & it becomes much more prominent w/OD. With the rear clip raised 3" vs OE, I needed the front pivot point raised a similar amount. Flipping the mounts raised the pivot point approx .500-.750" vs. OE placement of the rails.

Re: Need pictures of ....
If using a 1pc driveshaft, I think the 'opposite angles' is what's common.

do you mean the angle should be one degree less than or greater than the tranny angle? ie. if the tranny is at 4* down, should the pinion be 3* up or 5* up? |

Re: Need pictures of ....
This will be fun to figure out on mine. How does this relate to a two piece drive shaft? Once I get panhard bar mount done this is next.
