It's pretty much the exact same thing, only the 4l80e is electronically controlled instead of by a TVS cable. None of the lengths will be any different. As far as changing transfer cases... from what will you be changing? The NP241 out of a 91 truck is going to be a driver's side drop. You can find them in passenger side drops, but it's hard.

The 4l80e is longer than the 700r4. The 4l60e shares the same dimensions as a 700r4 in the earlier units. heres a chart with tranny dimensions. http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInfo/trans_dims.asp

I assume the Edelbrock computer will run the 4L80E? Otherwise, you're gonna need something to control it...

Re: swapping a 700r4 to 4l80e

If it is running and driving already, it should be controlling the trans anyhow. 1991 was the first year for the 4L80E in the heavier trucks, so the Edelbrock system either used the stock ECM or piggybacks it somehow. The ad says it includes the harness and everything, so you should be good. Try to grab the cluster, too. It is teh electronic one, to save a ton of hassles.

Re: swapping a 700r4 to 4l80e

I can't view CL ads here from work so I can't see the details, but I assume this is in a Crew or Burb square body?

I remember looking at a '91 crew 2wd diesel a few years ago that had an OD tranny.
I was told by someone here (ElGracho?) that it was like a one year only thing and was a desirable tranny as it was not electronicly controled. It was not a 4l80e, but a 4l80; the "e" for electronic.
Not sure if that was only in the square body applications, or all GM trucks that year though?

Re: swapping a 700r4 to 4l80e

The Edelbrock MFI coversion for TBI motors uses the factory computer.
There is no such thing as a 4L80 only 4L80Es. If there was they whould be very sought after.

I would grab the tank also if it is a TBI motor than the sending unit is different. The fuel pump is attached to the sending unit and sits inside of the tank. As long as you have a long bed it will work.

Re: swapping a 700r4 to 4l80e

As far as the 4L80 non electric, you can, however do a valve body to make one from a 4L80E, or alternatively, start with a 4L60 and upgrade some parts. Shouldn't be hard to find a kit.
