15x8 rally wheels up front with drop spindles?

I've heard mixed opinions on whether 15x8 rallys will rub with a drop spindle. I have a set of 15x8 rally wheels and wanted to run 275/60's out back and 235/70's up front. The overall height of these tires are the same and I've seen this combo before and thought it looked good. Will I have any rubbing issues since the drop spindle moves each tire out 3/4"? The attached picture has this wheel and tire combination. I borrowed this picture from a fellow member

Would I be better off buying a set of 15x7's and running 215/70's up front?

Pics of rally wheels with wheel/tire sizes and drop would be great!

I dont think a 2 1/2 " spindle drop will give you too much "trash" on tire rubbing....but are you dropping the spring also? I run a cut coil (1 full ring up front), & figure that to be about 2 1/2" drop. Along with that is a 1 1/2" body drop, & I opted for a set of 6 1/2" van ralleys up front. Fronts are 225/75, & the rears are 255/70, on an 8" ralley. I am sure some of the rest will "chime in" on what has worked for them crazyL

I was planning on running a 2" drop spring up front as well. A 225/75 is about an 1/8" tall than the 235/70's I want to run, but the van rallys are offset a lot more inboard. Are you using trim rings on your wheels? Any pics?

Only the drop spindle will effect if the rim rubs on the lower control arm and lower ball joint, the spring drop will not. My 1974 with a 3" belltech drop spindle, rubs on the control arm with the steelie wheel that originally came on the truck, with modest trimming the rim cleared the ball joint.

I hadn't thought about the rim rubbing on the lower control arm as a result of the wheel shifting up, good info. What about the tire rubbing against the fender/inner fendor during turns because the wheel is shifted outwards by the spindle?

I'm concerned with the inside edge of the tire contacting the rear of the wheel well or fender during tight turns.

Well, I've got a 2.5" spindle drop with a 1" spring drop in the front...with a 4" spring drop in the rear. I have 255/60 tires on 15" Ralleys all the way around and I have ZERO issues. When the weather improves, and I can get home early enough, I'll post a picture or two.

PS...I have a 70 CST S/S with 5 lugs around and the added weight of a BB.

next how did you do the rear swap to 5 lug

now back on track.......

Your not going to have any issues with the RIM hitting I'm bagged and can run till my LCA is against my X memeber with no issues...BUT the tire is going to be way to close I would try the 235/75 on a 7" rim..it gives a great stance and make your rear tire look a bit bigger..also be sure to check your clearance on the top off the inner fender, hood hindge and heater box

....If you go to Webshots , under Hotrodhorn , you will find a few old pics of the truck. It ran 275/60's rear/ 225/75s front at the time, & the rings were different. I am running late 80's-mid 90's trim rings on all 4 corners, with the same 3 bar spinners that you show on the short step posted(need to upgrade pics) as far as backspace, I dont think you will find much diff tween the 8" ralley vs the 6 1/2 " version, but I can measure a pair up tommorro if you need to know? crazyL

Hottrucks...I found a good rear gear from a local yard and did a swap. I think it was out of a 78 C10. Wearing this suit is truely my pleasure. I have 2.5 spindle 1"CPP coil 255 60 on 7" van rims. They did rub when I went to 2" drop coil. There are 3 diffirent rims 8 truck 7 truck and van and the 6.5 van you will need the van rims for the 4.5 drop.

Moser makes axels that fit in place of the stock 6 bolt. use 71 72 drums

Both of you have a 3.5" drop up front, same size tires up front, and the 15x7 setup rubs and the 15x8 setup doesn't....I'm so confused!

This is informative,except people need to include where there's rubbing as well. I've read this and my concern is rubbing with 8" steelies on the lower control arm. It's hard to know who's had tire rub and who's had wheel rub. Also, be sure to mention tire size.
What I'd like to run is 8" steel oem-type (same dimensions as rallyes) with what they call a 4" drop,but it's 2.5" spindles and 1" springs.(I could never figure out why they call this a 4" drop)

special K the way I understand it is that the rim rubs the lca not the tire with that much drop most inner wheel wells are gone anyway ...

Also the way I understand it is that once you get into dropping a truck alot you run into issues and here they are in the order that they will hit

wheel wells
inner fender brace
hood hindge
heater box

I'm stopping just short of the heater box with cupped LCA, bags, 2 1/2" drop spindles,8" rallies (control arm trimmed) wheel wells gone ( replaced with 13" wide trailer fender) trimmed inner fender support and the hood hindge cut and a new bolt added....

Now keep in mind this is with a 29" tall tire (235x75) and the stock X memeber will lay ON THE GROUND so I will install bump stops. there will be aprox 3/4 to 1 inchof wheel travel left ( upwards) this will keep my ride height low

I don't know how except to say that ther is probably a geometry difference or equipment purchased. I bought the spindles from Summit and are made by Western.

Ok...As promised, I took a few pictures of Ole Greenie to give you all an idea of the drop I did to it. Specs are:
2.5" spindle drop
1" front spring drop
4" rear coil spring drop (this gives me about 1.5" to the rubber bump stops)
BB 454 LS6 (SB weight may vary)

I'd also like to point out that I have 255/60/15 on 15" Ralleys. Reds I believe had 275's on 8" Ralleys and were rubbing before he switched to the van wheels. Just a thought...

I also installed a CPP front sway bar.

To be more clear they Did Not rub with the 2.5 spindle and 1 " coil. They did rub when I went to the 2" drop coils. they rubbed the outer top inside of the inner fender

I originally had 275/60's all the way around on 8's. Lots of rubbing on fender lip. I switched the front to 225/70 on 6.5's. No rub at all now. Not the best pic, but it was dark when I got home. I will try to get a better pic on Saturday of the whole truck. I was worried about the wide rear and skinny front look, but I am very pleased with the look until I can afford a set of coys and new tires.
