Vinyl Tops

Ever see one? I saw a GMC recently that had a vinyl top since new. Has anyone else ever seen any. Thanks Jim

Re: Vinyl Tops

When these truck were new, GM's Chevrolet division created a tow truck from a '67 with an SS-inspired grille. It was yellow, with a black vinyl top, as I recall. I have a B&W pic, but not one in color.

Anyway, in the late Sixties and early Seventies, dolling up a vehicle could be done with various vinyl top material, port-holes in rear pillars of sedans, pin-striping, etc. When the Gummint said we needed to re-forumulate the horsepower numbers, lowered compression ratios (in light of the Arab Oil Embargo), all sorts of fru-fru and fluff came out of the woodworks to make our vehicles look different, if they couldn't run better.

But, the vinyl top option, that began in the early Sixties (1963) would naturally gravitate to some truck owners wanting to keep up with the times.

Here's a pic of that GM design studio rig. It was called the Golden Cameo. You might Google that and see what else you can find. The top doesn't show very well.

Hmmm. They say the memory is the first thing to go. I can remember a few Fords (brown body with black vinyl roof), but don't recall any GM....

Re: Vinyl Tops

It was actually a dealer option and it wasn't really a vinyl top but a spray on material much like the bedliners we have these days.

Re: Vinyl Tops

When I was a teen in the mid to late 70's, my neighbor 2 houses down had a '69 to '72 (I can't remember the grill). It was orange with black interior and a black vinyl top. It's the only one I've ever seen like that.

Re: Vinyl Tops

I used to have a color pic of it, but have lost it somehow.
The spray on stuff came in black or white according to the GMC dealers papers, but I'm sure someone tinted the white at one point or another. Seems not a whole lotta trucks got it interestingly enough.

Re: Vinyl Tops

I'm really thinking about a vinyl top on my '70. Funny I hated vinyl tops growing up, but this truck is so '70s I think it fits.

Do you have a scan of that article? My magazines have been buried in storage for years! Thanks Jim
