Questions about disc brakes for front

I've been kind of looking out here trying tofigure it all out, currently have 1970 C/10 6 hole 2wd. Now reading that will need to atleast find some diffrent Spendles like from a 72? Have read into some telling what has to be replaced tie rods mostly? My question is arent the spindles the same Diameter and Lenght, have worked it up in mind that could be done without changing spindles or is this completely wrong?

I am one of these who will check everything out before parts are bought, never like listening to some of the parts guy with questions?

I am guessing you want to stay with 6 Lug bolt pattern then You are going to have to purchase a New Upgrade Kit and here is what I purchased for my setup and worked wonderful http://www.classicheartbeat.com/cata...sion%20Kit.htm

Additional parts you need to purchase

New Ball Joints for your year and model (May not be a bad Idea)
Booster, and Master Cylinder & Proportioning Valve and Brake Lines for Disc Brake setup. since you have drums you need to upgrade.

ok can somebody tell me what the Specs. are for each set of spindles........If the one from 1970 are smaller or larger maybe albe to make things correct with access to machine shop? Not really wanting to give money for used ones or new priced the same where I've found online. So if anyone have the specifications of each set not lowerd jus the shaft I'm guessing?

Some of your info is correct some is not.
10-15 years ago,... you would have had to change to a 71-72 spindle or 73-87 spindle.
Now the aftermarket makes conversion spindles that will bolt directly on to your truck.
No ball joint change.
No tie rod change.
Sound simple?
Well it is,... kinda.
You will still need to purchase rotors, caliper, brake hoses, a disc brake master cylinder, and proportioning valve.
You will also need to bend a few steel brake line.
You have the option to keep your truck 6-lug up front,... but stock steel wheels won't clear the disc brake calipers.
(truck ralley wheels will, and most aftermarket wheels will)

Another option is to find a donor truck or front suspension.
71-72 or 73-87 trucks will work for donors.
You will need all the steering components also.

Nothing is really a simple bolt on.
There are other parts that will need to be changed besides just the spindle.

If you have more questions look around in the suspension section, or ask.

Lots of people find this out AFTER they finish the conversion then try to bolt the wheels on.

If you're looking to keep it stock looking, another option for wheels is ANY 71+ 4x4 stock wheel. They will fit over those 6 lugs and caliper. I recommend getting 5 of them and having all 4 plus your spare available to fit over a front caliper incase of a flat.

What would be better, switching the whole crossmember or just swaping everything but the crossmember?
There are two answers:
I prefer to leave the the original crossmember.
All of the front end components need to be taken apart, cleaned and inspected.
You may need new ball joint, tie rods, etc.
Swapping the entire crossmember will require you to support the engine or remove it.
I don't have enough info, about your plans,... to give a good answer.
If you just want to throw the entire crossmember under your truck, without checking anything,... that is your option.
Some people think it's faster since you don't have to disassemble both front ends.


Whats the benifit of having the later crossmember?
The crossmember itself? None in my opinion. It's the same.

What all power steering components would i need from the donor 79 truck?
Like the other thread says,... take it ALL. Centerlink, tie rods, idler arm, steering box and pitman arm. You can use your original stuff,... but at the least you will be swapping inner and outer tie rods and buying a $50 set of tie rod "conversion" sleeves.

It was a straight 6 not a v8, would that make a difference?

What engine are you going to use?
If you leave the original crossmember, and keeping the 6,... it won't matter.
Changing to V-8? You will need new frame stands, and engine mounts.
If you plan to use the 79 v8 stands in your 70 frame,... you will need to drill a few holes,... because the 67-72 frames are shorter in height than the 73-87 frames.



Again,... like alot of posts,... I'm trying to guess what your complete plans are,... with limited info.

O sorry, next spring the motor and tranny are getting taken out to get worked on and my plans are switching it from 8 lug to 5 lug and i have the rear end of a 71 that im putting in but the front set up is still up in the air. My truck is a v8 and the donor truck is a v6 and im keeping my v8 as its was recently rebuilt im just resealing it. I want this truck to be a daily driver and so i would look through it all and if anything was wore out i would replace it so im taking it apart one way or another to make sure that its in good condition. I am putting in power breaks as they are safer and have easier stoping abilitys and my break lines arent the best so im planning on redoing my whole break line set up to make sure i dont have any problems down the road. I hope this helps.
