what is the secret

to removing the junction block (the main one) that comes through the firewall for the lights and such. I am removing that harness and putting another old one back in. this in my 1t as the fuse block is all screwed up. i know that the grommet is separate from the junction

Sorry, I'd respond to the question (if I knew the answer), but I really don't understand the question being asked. Maybe I'm a little slow.

Re: what is the secret

thks Alan. where the main wire junction goes through the firewall between the m/c and firewall,. it disconnects there and there is that hard rubber grommet that goes around it. Hows does one remove it without destroying it(or can you) next . how do you put it back together again. everyone that redoes their wiring takes it out. what do you put back in

Re: what is the secret

I'm guessing here. I removed mine over 3 years ago. From the pics I'd clean up the grommett and reinstall. Then lube the connector with KY or a suitable lube and slip the connector back back in the grommet. I could be completely wrong just my .02. I don't think I have my old harness, but will check my extra cab and see if it has it in it.

Re: what is the secret

I use white grease on that stuff, but being so old the parts are not very pliable anymore.

I think that I found the secret to these grommets. does anyone know if you can get new ones and or what do you use with a new harness.
anyway as the they do get quite hard with age and are a sob to get out, they do go back together quite slick. just before you are to reinstall them, one puts them in the microwave for about 1 min on high and they should come out quite pliable, like new. use some white grease on them, inside and out. right away put them in their hole in the firewall and immediately install the junction block in it. done. if you fart around to long and it will harden up again, so just put it back in the microwave till it is pliable again.
so I imagine if one could find away to heat it up without damaging anything, it would make it a lot easier to take apart in the first place

Re: what is the secret

Those grommets are available at classic parts ( formally chevy duty ), and i suppose Lmc and the others that deal with our year wiring. The big grommet runs about $4.00

Re: what is the secret

Sounds like a heat gun would work in removing it from the truck. That should heat it up and make it more pliable. Maybe even help in the re-install by keeping the temp up, just don't melt the wires/plastic connectors.

Re: what is the secret

the centre section goes out towards the back. it sits behind a lip with the use of some small s/drivers you can get it out of there. a little white grease or vaseline in there will help. It is just that the rubber has hardened up

Re: what is the secret

[I]did find it easier to drop the wires out of the receptacle. just make a tool out of gas welding rod ( or an old wire coat hanger) . flatten it out with a hammer and then make it a little narrower to go in and release the little locking tab that holds the wire end in. should have told you before. just gets all of the wires out of the way. the wiring diagram in the assembly manual wire give you the order of how they go back in. you have to take them out for the microwave . only give it 20-30 mseconds at a time until it is pliable when you want to put it back and do it while it is still warm
