4:10 3rd ??

Hi all,
I am considering a HO52 4:10 3rd member out of a 67-72 3/4 ton chevy;
(with a 350 motor and an auto trans). I'm trying to get some better drivability out of my '51, 1 ton panel and the 5:14, HO72 just isn't doing it for me.

smart move! i swapped the 4.57 for a 4.10 in my 72 burb c20 and even that 10% improvement has made a difference in highway driving and fuel economy. it sill is stout enough that the 307 and 3 on the tree combo has no trouble zipping around town.

only one trans i would want in front a 5.14......a modern 6 speed with the softest top gear available. would be a real stump puller in front of a hopped up 292.

3.73 x .7 = 2.61
5.14 x .52 = 2.67

Thanks for the good info...much appreciated. I'm not understanding the 2 equations though. Can you explain?

.7 is what you get for an overdrive gear in many transmissions like the 700r4. you can get a modern 6 speed manual from the aftermarket with a .52 or .62 top gear.

realistically you want your overall ratio to be under 3.00:1 for good mileage and easy highway driving. if you have a really powerful engine or high power to weight ratio, closer to 2.00:1 will be even nicer.

my 89 lesabre 3.8 fwd was right at 2.00 in top gear and it was great on the highway. now, if it had had a stroker kit and some tweaking, it wouldn't have been such a dog on hills. in contrast, my dad's 99 burb 2wd w/ 350tbi, 3.42 rear has an effective top ratio of 2.39 and it loafs along at 1900rpm at 60mph. darn thing gets 22mpg.
