Detroit series 60 covers a pretty big range of engines. What engine are you wanting to use?

The "old" series 60's were 4 cylinders, the newer ones are 6 cylinders and weigh just shy of 3000lbs. I can't recommend that kind of weight on a 1 ton's front suspension.

Thanks for responding to this "out there" topic.


i'm talking about the newer 6 cyl DDec3-4 engines found in alot of highway tractors.

i'm thinking it might be easier to put it in the bed of a 1-ton and make it mid-engined.

The purpose of this project is to learn more about this engine, get it running it a vehicle, thus getting more comfortable with it. May want to get involved, hard-core, in trucking. Produce, you know.

Anything is possible with enough welding rods and money, and you would definitely learn a thing or two in the process.

I'd say heck no. A series 60 is huge, even the baby 12 litre. I put a 8V92 in a K30 years ago and it ripped the frame in half so then I put the body and engine in a military truck frame. You might be able to put a series 50 in one since they are the 4 cylinder model. If you're wanting detroit power I'd find an inline 6-71. That would be cool.

i'm thinking i would put it in the bed of a lwb 1-ton or better yet chassis cab 184"wb. This, in itself, may seem "crazy," but when you consider there will be nothing else back there (i'm giving up that space for the drivetrain) maybe it does not seem so crazy after all.

The purpose of this project is to learn about the detroit 60 engine. (thinking seriously about getting into trucking) Why not just get a tractor and tinker? Cheaper, easier access to engine and no parking problems.


The other alternative might be to get a c-60 medium duty with short enough wb so i can make a mega pickup out of it much like the ford 550/international thing.

That is simply amazing; Great---you've got me addicted now.

i'm thinking another possibility would be to get a 4x4 1-ton and then cut into the cab firewall and floor as nessesary to accomodate the engine and trans? The cab can also be "jacked up" from the frame if nessesary for clearance.

So, in this case the junkier and more incomplete/basket case the truck is the better.

I'd stay away from the 60 series and lean in the direction of a 53 series and if you are a purist and want the ultimate a 71 series... I went with a 8v71N in my 72 C-?? 4x4

I agree. The early Detroits make a better swap. A 60 series would be awesome in a bigger truck
