Need 5 speed tran for truck

My 67 has a 71 corvette 350 in it hooked up to a 3 speed trans. I'm wanting to put a 5 speed in it and upgrade the rear end to a limited slip. Any suggestions on which trans/rear end combo from a newer model would work best?

thanks for any advice.

Re: Need 5 speed tran for truck

thanks so much. This will get me through I hope. But what about the drive shaft/rear end? Can I run the drive shaft in it now and drop in a rear end from like a 91 pickup?

Pretty sure the drive shaft will have to be cut. I can't help much on the rear. I know a '91 wouldn't be a bolt in. You should be able to find a '67-'72 Posi to put in it.

Re: Need 5 speed tran for truck

I heard the limited slips were better than posi's. Is that not the case? I want to be able to get traction in both rear wheels.

I don't have a clue on that one... Maybe another member will chime in on it.

Limited slip you have a "power tire" until it spins enough then the other tire will start lock in to get enough traction where you can go again. Posi-trac both of your tires are "power tires" at the same time both of them are always getting power to them.

Re: Need 5 speed tran for truck

I have 12 BOLT rear end, none dana, not sure of the gearing inside, seems like posi, both tires will spin at same time on gravel at least, thats when I noticed it, were all or most 12 bolts rear ends posi?

Re: Need 5 speed tran for truck

Well the difference between the two is good to know. I'm wanting the posi then if BOTH wheels spin. Does it have to be a 67-72? Other years or makes that will fit? I heard camaro's will but not sure. I'm going with a Jeep AX15 tran, S10 tail.

Re: Need 5 speed tran for truck

The Camaro is too small, too narrow and what ever else that won't work in that truck.

Every time I read "I heard" it usually means that the local mouthbreathers have been spreading another layer of bs and doesn't have a lot of substance. Some of the guys will have to chime in but I think you can use a 73/87 Rear without a lot of hassle but it may not be a bolt in.
Also have you checked to see if that Jeep trans will bolt to the bellhousing you intend to use or are you using an adapter?

The driveshaft will most likely require a trip to the driveshaft shop to get done right when you have everything else back together. They will either shorten yours or build you a new one. It costs a bit but the results should be better than trying to shorten your own. I've shortened a bunch of them and the only one I had problems on was my 71 GMC and it has taken some work and still isn't as good as it should be.

Re: Need 5 speed tran for truck

mr48, I agree, anytime I hear "aww this will work" I come to this forum. I did some research and from what dock says, I'll be using an adapter. I thought they said using the S10 tail on the tran would keep me from having to cut the shaft, but I guess that depends on which rear end i use too.

Re: Need 5 speed tran for truck

Hi guys, my first post was gonna be pics of my new '70 C-10, but i haven't figured out how to upload pics to this forum yet. Thought I would throw my .02 at this.

First, Positraction is just Chevy's branding of their clutch type LSDs/ limited slip differentials. Same goes with their Gov-Lock.

FWIW, the T-5 is regarded as a weak piece of crap by many in the Jeep scene, so forget V-8s and towing.

The AX-15 is definitely stronger than the T-5, and is considered to be a medium-duty light truck tranny. Aisin, who makes the AX-15, also makes similar trannies for Toyota, GM, and others, so that may help.

The NV3500 is reputed to be a fair amount stronger than the AX-15. The Jeep variant is the NV3550, and it has a separate bell housing (unlike the 3500). The 3500s and 3550s released in 2000 Chrysler vehicles (including Jeeps) had a defect in the internal shift linkage which would cause it to pop out of 1st or 2nd gear. My Jeep's 3550's 1st gear became useless. There was a TSB, but parts to fix it are apparently only available through dealerships, and cost about $450. This is reputed to be a tricky tranny to rebuild, and a jig is required to assemble it.

The NV4500 came in Dodge and GM pickup trucks, and is rated as a heavy-duty light truck tranny. I put one of these in my Jeep to replace the 3550. It has a granny 1st (5.63:1, except in '92-'93 GMs it was 6.3:1), so it's a truck tranny, not a hotrod tranny. Dodge had a heavier-duty version for their diesel pickups. This tranny weighs over 200# and requires 4-5 quarts of a special gear lube: Castrol Syntorq (not Syntech!) which generally goes for $20-$30/ qt. Some yayhoos with souped-up turbo diesels, hauling 30K# at 70 mph in 5th gear had problems with the 5th gear retaining nut backing off. There are a number of fixes to help prevent this, but you probably won't need it, and shouldn't tow any significant weight in 5th gear anyway.
