Transfer case adapter seal replacement help!

I think I have a leaking seal between the transmission and transfer case.
The tranny is a SM465 (I think) (4 speed w/granny gear) and the transfer case is NP205.

I pulled the speedometer gear drive last night to remove a broke cable and oil seeped out. The transfer case oil level was slightly above this.

I have read there are two seals located inside the transfer case, and then I saw reference to an o-ring. Is the o-ring only on automatics? I didn't see it in the parts diagram.

Has anyone seen the oil seal replacement illustrated online? I have seen great write ups on transfer case rebuilding but nothing on replacing the oil seals.

Does anyone have the specks on the oil seal and o-ring.

There is two o ring seals around the coupler shaft in the adapter housing. I believe these are the ones you are talking about. They were available at a 4x4 shop here in town when i got mine. Try www.drivetrain.com

I see two seals listed hear #37. I don't see any o-ring's

If your truck has the sleeve between the transmission and transfercase (pre-1985) there are two seals. One at both ends of the adapter sleeve.

This is the tcase side.


This is the transmission side. This adapter is actually a TH350/NP205 but still the same seal and sleeve arrangement as a 465/205

Since the seals go in with outer faces facing inwards are they hard to get into position?. I know this is the best way to install to seal but there isn't must to press on when installing them. How did you install them?

Also, I see some blue material, did you add some RTV to the seals when installing?

I used a big arse socket to tap them in as I didn’t have a seal driver large enough. The correct tool would be a seal driver. The blue stuff is just the paint from the seal casing...not RTV.

Csb above mentioned o-rings and he is correct. There is also an o-ring that goes on the tailshaft of the automatic trans that goes inside the sleeve. It is usually a good idea to smear some gasket material inside the sleeve threads as well. Between these two seals and that o-ring is probably where your leak is. Replace them all at the same time.

Oh yeah thanks larry the o rings i was refering to were the ones in the adapter housing,(don't know why i called them o rings) i completely forgot about the ones around the input shaft.

Do the seals need to be pressed all the way in ? There is a lip inside the transfer case, does the seal go all the way down or is it flush with the top? I can't tell from the pics but it looks lik the seals were pressed all the way in until you can't go any further.
