Another Low-Rise Hood Pic

I knew I had this somewhere. We were all talking about the hood on that GMC a member bought in the last month and I just came across this picture of a sweet looking truck with the same or similar hood:

would have looked better if the side raised parts matched the drop in the center. other than that not bad

I'm not too impressed either. Looks rather dorky to me. To each their own.

Re: Another Low-Rise Hood Pic

Most of you who are newer to the scene won't be familiar with these low-rise hoods and other truck accessories of the '70s. The off road boom had begun and there were a lot of parts introduced and from the vintage accessory stand point these things are way cool, whether you prefer the look or not. Back then the Baja 500 (or was it 1000?) was a big deal and this piece reflects the popularity of off road racing in it's fledgling years. They were indeed offered as a way to improve visibility while 4 wheeling, not for looks. The way they are,the truck's profile is unchanged. IMO,it wouldn't look as good with the whole hood flattened out. Fiberglass body mods were a big thing coming out of the '60s and mostly looked down on by today's enthusiasts. "You just had to be there",is the theme with this stuff. Just like all the stuff people are doing now, mods are viewed differently as time moves on.

I think Vick Hickey marketed hoods like that and other body parts back in the day. Mainly catered to the offroad crowd.

I dont much care for the hood with the stock fenders but maybe some flared out fenders and that hood and id bet it could look pretty sick.

Re: Another Low-Rise Hood Pic

It seems the stuff really came out once the '73s came out and so much more was available for them. I remember Hooker got into chrome roll bars, tube bumpers, brush guards, hoods, and even roll pans that worked with the tube bumpers. And,of course, fender flares! Dick Cepek and Desert Dynamics came out with stuff, too. A bit later, once lift kits really took off,Fly-N-Hi was making stuff that was more flashy. I love seeing the old tires. There were so many companies and tread designs it's nuts.

WOW. Can't think of the last time I saw a set of Armstrong Tru-Trac tires like on the red and white truck.

I just ran across this Blazer in my pictures while looking for some of my trucks with the big Armstrong Tru Tracs I used to run (never found those).

Re: Another Low-Rise Hood Pic

Knew a guy that had a hood like this, he tried explaining it to me but never got a good mental picture of it. THANKS Special-K!!!. IMO it looks kinda outa place on the trucks but of course we're all use to the stock hoods so when we see something like this it throws us off. Once i look at it for a while it dont look to bad at all.

Re: Another Low-Rise Hood Pic

Does anyone still see these hoods come up for sale? Either for our years or the later blazer years? I would like to find one for a 76 Blazer Chalet I am looking at buying, it would look awesome!

I never see them around here...never did. This place is lame for cool truck stuff
I'd ask on CK5 or another off road site.Problem is,once you bring it up the others will want it,too.lol
I think these are truly cool, but definitely look right on the 73-80 trucks.

Re: Another Low-Rise Hood Pic

Thanks again Special-K, I will try the CK5 site. They might have one on the "for sale" boards. I will take your advice also in not posting a thread with "does anyone have one of these", then like you said, everyone will want one I might get lucky!
