best carb
I just got a new 4 barrel intake and wondering what is the best carb to run on my 283. im looking for gas milage without losing too much performance, its just going to be a daily driver. I live in a really hilly city so would low end power be best? right now its a stock 283 with a hei distributor from a 350 and a new fuel pump.

Re: best carb
A Holley 600cfm carb is bigger than you will ever need with that engine and is fairly low maintenance.

Re: best carb
something with a spreadbore will give you the best mileage. A 500 edlebrock would do what you want, but I would try and find a good quadrajet and have it rebuilt by a shop.

Re: best carb
Quads are different sizes determined by engine size. You don't need any more than 500-600 cfm with a stock 283 unless it's built to the HILT.

Re: best carb
a 283 will run best with a rochester 4-jet. they can be a little tedious to set up as they have four floats to adjust. all gm v-8s used them at one time or another so there are different sizes out there. there is a carter that looks like a 4-jet, a wcfb. don't even think about slowing down for this one. i may have one around someplace, you can have it if i can find it. i also sposed to have the manifold for it also.

Re: best carb
500 Edelbrock would be perfect, set it and forget it

Re: best carb
Just won a 1406 edelbrock with air cleaner for 195 total on ebay. I'm putting it in my 283. There is a thread on the engine forum that talked about which size carb to go with on a 283 that's why I got it. The 1403 (500 cfm) is harder to find. Good luck.

Re: best carb
Hope fully you got a dual flange manifold ,the Quadrajet wil flat out get the best milage hands down ,. you can tighten the secondary air doors so they have more tension and that will limit the flow and make the car more responsive .. get one with an electric choke and you won't have to mess with the gas petal when it is cold out ..
