Frame and Cab VIN Questions
Hi guys,
I'm looking at buying a truck locally, but the partial frame stamped VIN and the cab plate VIN differ by one number sequentially. The frame vin is xxxx23 and the cab plate vin is xxxx24. Is it possible that the factory maybe mismarked one or the other when it was coming off the line? The truck appears to be relatively untouched so I can't imagine someone piecing together two trucks that came off the line one after another? The current title VIN is the same as the stamped VIN on the cab. |

Re: Frame and Cab VIN Questions
Yes, it happened sometimes. I don't know how often or why but cabs being one number off from the frame did happen on the assy line.
As long as your cab vin matches the title vin your good to go.

Re: Frame and Cab VIN Questions
Thanks for the response.
The only problem I worry about is that at the DMV, they check both frame and cab VINs. So would they question the one number off, or know that it may have happened from the factory? The seller says that he knew the previous original owner and that neither of them had ever even checked the frame VIN before. |

Re: Frame and Cab VIN Questions
Here in Nevada they only care about the cab VIN unless you specify the frame vin differs. I would just go down and say thats they way you bought it. I imagine the previous owner has a clean title? Unless they're more stick in Kansas I doub't you'll have any problems.

Re: Frame and Cab VIN Questions
my longhorn is the same way.
I'd try and run it through, and if someone says something, honestly I'd be a a hole about it. I'd probably say something like "Yeah, I searched for years for the very next VIN truck to steal and try and pull the wool over your eyes... that'd be litereally impossible to do on a 40 year old truck. It obviously left the assembly line like that". I don't exactly recomend doing that, but I know I would end up doing it. |

I agree, it would be nearly impossible for someone to do that. Well that puts my mind at ease and I'm more interested in buying the truck. Thanks for all the help Last edited by 29od1; 03-07-2011 at 05:02 PM. Reason: spelling |

Re: Frame and Cab VIN Questions
Frame vin is on the top side of the driver's side frame right about where the engine block starts. Some also are located on top of the frame under the cab about where the driver sits.
