Fix and rechrome or just replace?
Hi guys.
I just got a picture as I sit here overseas from my dad of my truck of which he has been painting for me for that last year. I look at everything in this picture, one HUGE thing just sticks out and screams at me. If you cant see what Im talking about, look at the grille frame. Its just doesnt have the lustre that it probably did in 1971... My question to you peeps is Do you think it would be worth it to clean up the little dents and scratches and have it rechromed? Or is it worth the the $270 to buy a new, repoped one? Just thought I would ask! Thanks Jeryd

Re: Fix and rechrome or just replace?
it was never chromed from the factory// it is aluminum and came anodized// aluminum is easily polished once the anodizing is removed// it can b sent out and chromed too just figure around $1000 to have it done

Re: Fix and rechrome or just replace?
It all depends on how you want it chromed. Driver or show quality?

Re: Fix and rechrome or just replace?
If you are patient and have the time. you can remove the anodizing and polish. Yuk. Or have it re-anodized. None of the suppliers grilles we have seen fit great. They fit great for daily driver but if for show I would spend the money. Do some re-search locally and see if you can find someone doing anodizing is what I would do. In my experience anodizing runs less then chroming

Re: Fix and rechrome or just replace?
I talked to a guy about 3 years ago, who was recommended to me as someone who "can redo" the stock grille. He told me about $450-500 to get rid of the anodizing, get rid of the nicks and dings, then sand it until smooth before polishing it.
Another guy, who does powder-coating said to go to Sherwin-Williams automotive paint store and buy their wheel polishing kit. He had done so and got excellent results. So, off to S-W and buy it, I did. Then, I bought some tripoli (white) polishing compound (it's for aluminum and the first stuff to use). Anyway, with your labor, some E-Z Off oven cleaner and about $130 for the polishing kit and the additional tripoli compound....you can do your own grille and maybe expand into doing others....for money.

Re: Fix and rechrome or just replace?
All I'll say is that I've seen some SUPER NICE show trucks over the years... and it's almost always obvious when a repop grill has been used...

Re: Fix and rechrome or just replace?
I would buy a new one, but I would keep the old one and have it refurbished and chromed in the future, when money is more available after restoration!!!!

Re: Fix and rechrome or just replace?
Certain aircraft strippers will HELP remove the anodized material, then sand, sand and sand some more. Sears sells a good polishing kit with white rouge, leaves aluminum WELL polished. I've done this on Porsche rims.
