swapping a np8 into a np2
has anyone did a swap of a np8 from a new style 1999 gm ext 4x4, 5.3, 4l60e into a 2003 chev ext 4x4,4.8, 4l60e that had a failed np2. the wire, switchs, dash, nuts are compleat in the 99 truck. can this be switched over with out to much head banging. i know the 03 is a drive by wire and the 99 is a old school cable. i think there maybe some bs with computers/wires on the 1999 np8 moveing up into the 2003 that may have some unforeseen issues with the wire/computers. the nuts and bolts/wire appear to be strait forward. any thoughts with this would be appreciated. thanks guys

Re: swapping a np8 into a np2
NP2 is a manual shift NP261 and the NP8 is the NP246 electric shift Autocrap tcase. You want to replace a reliable manual shift with an electric shift??
How did your NP2 fail? Chain rub a hole in the case? That happens to the NP8 and NP1 (NP263) as well. Personally, I wouldn’t swap any electric shift tcase into anything other than a boat to use as an anchor but if you must you will need the control head, transfercase control module and study a circuit diagram to wire everything in correctly. I beleive the front axle disconnect is also different on the NP8 Autocrap trucks as well. Different driveshafts will also be needed but the tcase itself will bolt right up to the transmission. I wouldn't do it. Electric shift tcases are as reliable as an anvil made of legos.
