Fuel pump still leaking

Well I replaced my leaky fuel pump but now where the hard line goes into the pump is still leaking. It tight but still leaks. Has anyone dealt with this problem? Getting frustrated and very smelly. HELP

Re: Fuel pump still leaking

Yeah, I went thru this, I cant remember how I got it to seal up. Is it a pre flared joint or did you do it?..

I just kept loosening, tightening and finally got it to seal, I even tried a new fuel pump and a new hard line!

It is pre-flared and its a new fuel pump and a new fitting. I'll try looseining and tightening again just sucks with that gas running down my arm.

Have you checked the line itself for a crack in the flare. I take it that it's on the carb side.

Don't forget to disconnect the battery first

Re: Fuel pump still leaking

vettevet It leaked real bad with the hard line so I cut it and ran a rubber hose half way down to the fuel pump with a new 90 degree fitting, but still leaks but not as bad.

rudy thanks for warning.

Re: Fuel pump still leaking

As vettvet mentioned check real carefully for a hairline crack on the flare. I had one that did the same and the harder you tighten the more it opens the crack.

You have to look real carefully at the contact surface for the crack or an uneven contact sureface.

I'm not trying to be a wise %*#, but did you try wrapping the threads with an over abundance of teflon tape? I had same problem, also try and get it as dry as possible, gas has a tendency to "thin-out" teflon tape.

Re: Fuel pump still leaking

This might be a stupid question but how come some people don't like rubber hoses. I've seen alot of people use them and never had a problem. Just asking not being an a$$, just want to know.

Re: Fuel pump still leaking

i state my opinion based on over 50 years playin with old cars and the bad results i've seen by shortcut guys using rubber fuel lines rather than going thru the effort to lean the skill to craft a bulletproof hardline

Rubber fuel lines are disliked because eventually they will fail (leak) which obviously creates a huge fire risk. You'll find that a lot of people on this site are very anti-rubber fuel lines and others who have no problem with them.

My understanding was that you weren't supposed to use teflon tape with flare fittings because the flare was supposed to be self-sealing- the threads only tighten the connection. Is that wrong?

You are right dmack

I just tried to loosen and tighten a couple of times and with no luck s__t is still leaking. So with my hand full of gas and smelling like a gas station I give up for now.

Re: Fuel pump still leaking

Ok I'm back and started fresh. Man sometimes you just have to walk away from things before you break something. Well I went and bought a pipe bender and pipe cutter and some hard line. Hardline is the way to go period. NO leaks and the bending part wasn't to bad at all. Did I tell you guys that it didn't leak anymore. Well thanks for all your help guys. Man I love this site.

Re: Fuel pump still leaking

On my friends truck we had the same problem comeing out the fuel pressure regulator. We tried teflon pipe dope and teflon tape. Still leaked. Then our millwright friend put on on a layer of dope, then tape, then more dope. The thing sealed!!!
