Upper/Lower control arms
Is there a way to modify you upper or lower control arms.
I would like to modify my uppers and Im looking for some information if any. I thought I saw a product a while back that consisted of plates that you could raise the ball joint plate, thus lowering your truck. Has anyone seen this before? Any info on modifiying either the upper or lower is appreciated. 1972 c-10 383 ci th400 12bolt WORK IN PROGRESS |

Yes, have seen what you are talking about. It's called Zing and it is done on the lower a-arm. 1"
will give you appox. 2" drop. |

DJM Suspension offers 3" drop lower a-arms. Basically, they lower the spring cup in the a-arm.

Just cut one coil and it'll lower the front end 2". You won't even have to align the front end.

Thanks guys, thats enough info to keep me busy for a while.
One question I have though, does cutting the springs effect the ride? Does it bounce too much? I have seen a guys truck who said he had cut his springs, he was bouncing all over the place. Did he cut too much? Thanks again guys.

if you are going to cut coils, don't cut more than 2 coils. otherwise, yes, the ride will get way too bouncy due to decreased overall support from spring rate. Also, make sure the end of coil is in same position as original so that it sits right in the spring pocket.
i don't know how much drop you are trying to get, but if you lower it much more than 3", you'll need shorter shocks to compensate for change of travel. good luck! |

What about this Z ing?
Anyone know of a shop that does it? I just want to do something different, you know, I want to go low without airbags and stuff if at all possible.

Zing
You can do this yourself? Or have a certified welder help you. You need to remove the lower A-arm from the truck. Ask help from a front-end shop. This is a well known term. Zing your A-arms.

If you can find a copy of Street Trucks Magazine from January 2000. there is an article called...
The Big Low Down by Bill Turner... It is a How To on Stepping lower A Arms about 35 pictures to show you How. Then in the March 2000 issue it continues with a How To on Dropped Cross member. with many pictures. Turner Enterprizes also sells Stepped A Arms, Dropped Cross member. & 2" drop springs giving you a total drop of 5.5" in front while retaining the factory ride. So with this you can drop 2" or 3.5" or 4" or 5.5" the choice is all yours. z'ing the a-arms is not much different than z'ing a frame. the purpose is the same- to lower the ride height. this would be a welding-intense exercise and quite frankly, is completely unncecessary to get a good drop.
z'ing the arms basically accomplishes the same thing as a drop spindle. by z'ing the a-arm, you effectively raise the spindle up. alot of work is involved with this, all parts must line up, the welds had better be great, and also lots of time involved. honestly, i would not invest my time in that venture. too many other options that are more cost/time effective. that's just my opinion though. in any case, good luck!! |
