steering column woes !

Hi Folks,

I am looking for some advice on how to secure the part of the steering column that holds the auto trans. shift indicator screen. This is the collar piece that sits directly behind the steering wheel, and the turn sigal switch bolts to it. It also sits in front of the collar that rotates as you change gears. it flops around when you move the gearshift lever. It looks like it is just supposed to rotate to lock into place, but it wont stay where it is supposed to...any suggestions ??

the truck is a 68 ( not the one in my profile pic..thats a 71 )..I'm hoping to have this done today !! do you think I am missing a piece that hold this in place ??

There are some "feet" stamped into the upper end of the main column tube. With the shift housing and wires ALREADY in place this piece goes over the end of the column and turns to lock behind the "feet" when the screws pull it up against them. I make sure that the column and bracket are in the correct orientation using where the "4 way flasher" switch is/will be located. The kind of triangular piece that the turn signal assy screws to is the key and it is notched so it will only fit the tube one way. DO NOT forget the spacers and bearings that go in too! It can be quite a handful with all these pieces trying to go every which way at once, but if I did it, (several times!) you can do it!

Les, Thanks your info was spot on !! The 3 screws pulling against the feet was the key. Heres a pic of what I'm workin on. Now if I can get the new door latch assemblies to cooperate !..Jeff
