Almost FED UP!!!

So I am doing the power steering conversion on my '66, one of many things that are getting upgraded. My buddy called and said he was having problems getting the bracket to bolt, as in: it wont! Its a 1968 327 (I ran the numbers) with apparently is terribly hard to find as far as brackets go. I have three different pumps, all with different brackets, and none of them line up. The engine still has factory ramhorns, with two threaded holes facing the front of the engine. Its a short water pump front end, and all the brackets I find are almot $100, and I dont even know if they will work...so where do I go from here? The shop has already burned in the adapter from CaptainFab, mounted the box, and shortened the steering shaft, so Im all in. Im also stuck....some one HELP!!

ya sounds like it.. um why not fab one or call the place for the ones that are $100 and see for sure and if not see if you can return them?

You may have better luck in the engine forum, ill move if you would like?

Are you running V belts? Are you going for pretty, or functional?

May have you covered. I am doing a 1968 BB truck and the power steering in 68 (Only) if I remeber right, was different. I came across this guy in Az that usually has any bracket/ pully you need. He goes by Big Block Jim or Jim @ 480-981-3096. He was very helpful to me. Hope this helps.

If you can post some pics of the pumps and brackets that you have, we can determine which one if any of the ones you have will work. With a short water pump small block, you have to have the short water pump PS brackets. There are several variations, but they will all work. The most common ones that I find are from the '67-'72 trucks. Post a pic of your crank and water pump pulleys too.

Shouldnt the pump mount to the block and the alt to the manifold? Thats the way my 68 is, unless of course you have heads with accessory holes

For an easy/ clean install why don't you look into running a remote resevior pump like I ran. (last page of my build) it was like 150 off eBay for the whole thing pump,lines,resevior and fittings.

heres the pics....not the best, Im gonna ride out there today and work a bit more on it....I may be fabbing up something, I just dont have the cash!! The right photo shows the drivers side, and you can see the pwer steering pump at the bottom, and that bracket is actually a alternator bracket. we were fishing at this point, obviously. Im just lost as to what to do right now....

That pump and bracket you have there is for a long water pump small block. What you need isn't anything specific to a '68 pickup. You just need a pump and brackets for a small block with a short water pump. Also in looking at your crank pulley, you don't have a groove right up next to the balancer. That is where the alternator belt will need to be with a short water pump setup.

Do you have access to a long water pumnp and all the accessory brackets? If so you might be better off convertion to a long water pump.

Here is a pic of a short water pump small block alternator drive. This is the only one I've found so far. I'll keep looking for a PS setup.

ok, so I got a couple of billet pulleys from a buddy, put the alternator back in the stock spot, and we are fabbing a top brakcet for the power steering pump. The bottom bracket on a donated pump will work. Looks like everything is shaping up....hopefully...lol. Thank you to all who have chimed in! I LOVE THIS FORUM!!

If that doesn't work check with Alan Groves, their stuff is real good. It's reasonable too.
