Lokar Transmission dipstick question

I am in search of a Lokar Trans dipstick for my project. I recently purchased part number 1213134, the bellhousing mount type and it is too short. I measured from the mount, where it goes into the case of the transmission to the end of the dipstick itself and it's 15in long.

Lokar offers part number 1211144, a fairewall mount version. They offer two with the same pn just 1211144-36, which is 36 in long. I think that will be too long. Does anyone know how long the other one is? (non -36) Does anyone have the locking Lokar dipstick and could maybe provide a different suggestion / part number?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

I used a Lokar TD-3350400FM (firewall mount, about 24" long) on my turbo 350 in my Model A. I mounted it to the back of the passenger side head on my 350 SBC using the tapped accessory holes.

Did this back in 1997... not sure the part number is still good though.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

I've got one of the trans mount setups and had to add some bracketry to make it work. Won't buy another. Not sure I trust what it tells me either.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

CC69Rat The first dipstick you mentioned part number 1211144 is 26" long and is designed to mount to the firewall. It is also a locking style dipstick that has a positive seal on the bottom fitting that will require you to drop the pan and install the lower fitting that has a retaining nut so it will not blow or pull out. If you have any questions please contact our tech department Toll Free at 1-877-469-7440

I would agree. The Lokar dipstick has a plastic stick that ends up with so much tranny fluid on it that it leaves you wondering what the real level is. A stock GM tranny dipstick is much better in regards to reading fluid level.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

The one I ordered that's too short has a metal dipstick in it the best I can tell. Didn't unwrap it. I think they offer two different models. One with the anchor lock thing (like an air line hose fitting) and one without.

I am way impressed with the quality personally. I have their oil dipstick too and it's spot on. I just want to make sure I have the right one for my truck and fit over the GMPP valve covers.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

Lokar no longer uses the plastic inner measuring rod. The inner measuring cable is a flexible cable with a cast zinc end. All Lokar products have a lifetime warranty.
If you have any questions please contact out Tech department.

Sweet! Does that mean I can get a good deal on a replacement that is easier to read? You had to know I was going to ask that. My old Model A deserves only the best.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

....that still doesn't address my 200-4r assembly that is too short. If it were to be bolted to the closest hole its too short and pulls the bottom end out at a slight angle. It also brings it out where you could only check it with a cold motor or burn your hands.

My trucks 200-4r is also puking trans fluid on throttle release of WOT runs, so its not holding the fluid.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

Their locking model has a lower bolt that goes inside the pan to retain it, at least that's my understanding. You'd drop the pan and physically bolt the dipstick tube into the hole where it goes into the trans.

I'm sorry to hit a sore spot with some of you guys if I did (?) . I hope you get things worked out with your Lokar stuff. I will be buying throttle linkage and kickdown, etc soon. I have their shifter too and love it.

Thanks for the reply. I think I will try to save on shipping and pick one up either locally or at a show this year. The one I have works... just not real good.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

You guys are barking up the wrong tree - go with Milodon
These bolt up just like the factory units to the back of the tranny - 1st class parts all the way.
I have used the engine dipsticks, 350 tranny dipsticks and have a 700R4 dipstick ready to go with a new tranny.

Milodon 22110 - Milodon Stainless Steel Transmission Dipsticks

$69.00 or so new

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

There are a bunch of good ones out there, I just like that locking end on the Lokar dipsticks. It is a lot like an air line coupling. Pretty cool design, and clean looking too.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

Did you ever find the correct length and what was the part#?? Also, when you installed it was your engine and transmission already in the truck? I will try to attempt to do this soon, but my engine and transmission are both in the truck.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

Yes, the firewall mount version was perfect for my truck. I just ordered a TH400 / FW mount locking version from Summit. I don't recall the part# exactly but it was something like 1211114 (had a bunch of 1's in it)

It fits nicely but my TH400 has a deep pan on it. I had to shave just a little off the bottom bolt to get it to clear. No biggie though. You will have to drop the trans pan to install it.

Yes, my engine / trans was in the truck but the clip is off right now. Pics in my build thread.

Later.

Clip...meaning the front shell was off? I'm a tad worried that I cannot install the locking dipstick tube onto my transmission. The truck has been sitting since Jan of this year and it is leaking transmission fluid and since I will be dropping the pan, I figure get a better dipstick tube.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

The tube is flexible on the Lokar. I say (my opinion) this dipstick tube design will be the least likely to leak at the bottom. I'm sure there is someone out there than has had one to leak, but the rubber grommet that goes in where the normal stock dipstick just plugs in .. there is a big threaded bolt on the back side to hold the tube to the pan and seal it. It's really pretty impressive. My truck is a new build so it's easier yes, but if yours has been sitting for a year it might be time to dump the tranny fluid anyway (?) Just a thought. Lokar is expensive, there are other really good ones out there but I personally really like the Lokar stuff. Just my .02.

Later.

So, you think it won't be an issue installing this transmission dipstick tube into my transmission (since both engine and transmission) are in the truck? I prefer Lokar due to the locking mechanism rather than a rubber o-ring to securing the dipstick tube. Rather do this one time only and spend the extra cash on a quality product and excellent customer service, plus lifetime warranty.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

Just jacked up the truck and I have about 5" of gap space to play with to install the dipstick onto the transmission. Now, when you installed yours, did you just poked the top portion in the transmission and screwed it from the inside or it requires both sides to be turned/screwed? LMK...thanks bro!

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

My truck is a TH400, and the case positioning in the truck might be a little different, but I can't imagine it to be much (?)

But, when I installed mine the top side pops in like a rubber like gromet and the part that goes into the trans case is threaded. (You don't have to turn the outer part of the trans dipstick to thread it into the case. The bolt holds it from the back side. There's a big bolt at the other end (this is why you have to drop the pan) the bolt screws on to the part that slides through the gromet. The compression from tightening the bolt 'squishes' the rubber part (not super tight of course) enough so it creates the much desired seal.

Buy it. I am really happy with mine.
Hope this helps.

Re: Lokar Transmission dipstick question

Don't get the part no. 1211144-36. It is 36" long, which is TOO long. There is no where to place it. I bought it and found out the hard way. I am in the process of returning it for the part no. 1211144. I like the anchor locking design at the transmission hole. I have to drop my pan anyway so its no big deal.
