stepside box with hoist - leave it on or take it off?

im going to start working on my grandpa's 64 gmc 1 ton. it has an 8 foot stepside box with a hoist on it. im pretty sure it was bought from mainline motors in watrous, saskatchewan, canada and was used as a grain truck most of its life and has been sitting for about 15 years.

im not sure if i want to keep the hoist when i build it. if it was original equipment i might, but i looked closer at it and the hoist was made by western equipment ltd. im not sure if it was a dealer option or not.

What are your thoughts about it?

thanks for the input

I think that western euip is still around. they were not a dealer option. one order c&c and had the deck added, but could have been arranged by the dealer to have it all as one package

You see empty stepside trucks all the time... not so much stepside trucks with hoists. Sounds like a cool theme for the truck.

But.....

thanks so far guys, i want to swap out the inline 6 for 350 and use it for a summer driver and maybe some light work around the farm so i don't think i will really need the hoist. depends how deep i get into the restoration if i take it off or not. i will get some pictures for you guys when i go out to the farm next week. this is the first thing i am restoring so im excited to get started

Re: stepside box with hoist - leave it on or take it off?

well now that seeding and spraying is more or less done at the farm and at work i was able to finally get the truck from where it sat for the past 20 years. i was surprised the tires still held air all these years and all we had to do was hook up and pull it to our yard. here are some pictures so far. more to come after it finishes raining.

go to photobucket.com and open a free account, uploading pictures is super easy, and when you are done copy the img tag line

I had that problem on the h.a.m.b.. When I omitted several pics, then it worked...like I was trying to upload too much info.

I will look through my silver book , and see if I can find western and see what they advertise for 64.

Re: stepside box with hoist - leave it on or take it off?

I was in the truck body business for years, the truck did not come with the hoist it was added by a truck equipment dealer (same folks who install service bodies, cranes, lift gates etc. It really weighs a lot, and you may have trouble getting a later model transmission that has a pto opening on it for the pump/valve drive......or it may be electric. Anyway it was original to the period but not stock. If you are going to enjoy the truck I would remove it. Kieth

Really? I say keep the hoist, it is what makes this truck unique.

And thanks for posting the photos
