Water temp gage

I have started my engine a late 1970's 350 cu in and it runs well and I have put in my 62 gage package original with the truck. I also put an early sensor in the engine to match the electric of my gage. I did take the panel to an instument shop and had them checked. Now when I start the engine the gage goes from cold to full hot in less than 3 minutes. Yet my electric fan comes on and is moving a lot of air and using my lazer temp gage the engine does not get hotter than about 185 so the system is working but the gage acts funny.

Is there an answer for a gage that just goes direct to hot. It is not quick it does take 2 to 3 minutes.

Re: Water temp gage

Search the web for this part number 01513321. Its the correct sending unit. I ran into the same issue. The ones you can get at the local auto parts store does that.

I have not ordered the correct one yet, but plan too.

Re: Water temp gage

The late model sensor used with our gages draws too much current and the sensor overheats which makes it look like high water temp. The gage pegs out after a couple of minutes.

I would like to use the late model sensor because it is small and fits my LS motor. But I haven't found a solution yet, other than use the old 1/2" pipe thread sensors.

Re: Water temp gage

I received the new temp sensor that was referred to in the thread and installed it. Today when I started the truck it worked as it should and rose only with the engine temp.

I measured the engine temp at the radiator and the thermostat inlet and the temp stayed right at 185 degrees. The gage was near the top of the green arc but never over the green arc.

So is it just a matter now of measuring with the infared gage and then knowing where normal is on the engine and on the gage.
