Do you happen to know what gears are available for the HO52? I'd like to go a bit higher, but I thought parts were hard to find for them.

Thanks,
Paul

4.10', 4.57, 5.13 and a few other lower ones. 3.90's are rumored, but i have never seen a set. I am taking my 4.56's out for the 4.10's.

Cool, thanks for the info. I don't know what mine has, but with the 4-speed its like driving a tractor sometimes. Where can you get gear sets for these?

Thanks,
Paul

3.90's aren't a rumor. I know because I have them in my HO52. I had to have them put in with a detroit locker by this outfit: http://www.ringpinion.com/

I think they use Yukon mostly. I think the opportunity to put new ones in may have ended a few years ago though...probably makes my axle a rarity.

What is best way to drain and change fluid in this aside from putting a hose in the fill plug hole? Is there a way to tell specifically what gear ratio you have?

I pulled my cover (fluid will start running out when you remove the bottom bolts) then just reached in and scooped out the small amount left in the diff, and wiped it out with a rag. With the cover off, you can count gear teeth to get the ratio. Number of teeth on ring divided by number of teeth on pinion = gear ratio.

You didn't ask, but mine took 3 quarts of Mobil-1 full synthetic 75W-90. Got a new gasket and used Permatex 81182. It's made to use with gear oil -- good stuff.

Cool, thank you for all the info! Have much trouble getting parts for it, (i.e. brakes, gaskets)? Recommended Supplier?

Re: Eaton H052 fluid capicity

Haven't needed much in the way of parts.

Many years ago.... pocket bearing on the end of the pinion.... more recently, the (steel?) gaskets for the outer end of the axles.... brake shoes & wheel cylinders.... and the above mentioned diff cover gasket. All at my local Napa store.

If the housing is completely dry, it can take up to a gallon of lube. Gear swap, ...upwards of 3 quarts

Re: Eaton H052 fluid capicity

I think the 3.90's came out in the early 2k's. it was not cheap. and alot of nos parts were used up installing them in trucks. I dont exactly recall how much fluid the ho's use but I just did my rear and I thought it used about 4 qts.

that info would be in your owners manual

I'm getting smart with NAPA - surprised at some of their prices online are VERY competitive and availability of parts with "specialty" Shops like Classic & Brothers.
