gas tank help

this is the scoop ive removed the gas tank so that i may fix the gas gauge and lay down the new peel n seal
my question is how do i get the gas tank back in the truck behind the seat without tearing the gas neck filler gromment (rubber that is on the truck for the tank to go through) AGAIN. i have already go through three

Do you allready have the fuel tank grommet installed or do you have it "loose" on the fuel tank filler neck as you are installing the tank?

I have just left the fuel tank grommet installed on the cab and have removed and reinstalled my fuel tank several times and have not had a problem with it!

I took my grommet off, then pulled the tank. Reinstalled tank, put grommet back in. Just used a little wd-40 to lube it so it would come loose. Took less than 5 minutes.

I put the grommet in the truck, lubed it up with dish soap, and the filler neck slid in without too much trouble.

It does help to have a second person, though because the tank is a little unwieldy. I did it by myself, but if I had to do it again, I'd get a second set of hands.

I've done it several ways. First time I forced it off with the grommet instaslled and as mentioned above used lubricant (silicone or petroleum jelly-don't remember) to reinstall.

Another time I removed the grommet first before removal and reinstallation and put the grommet in afterwards from the outside. I used a plastic piece to push the lip in and worked it around the neck.

This last time I cut the old grommet off before removal and put a new grommet (original style rubber) in from the outside.

Either way works as long as the grommet is in good condition and pliable and well lubed.

Make sure you get the right size. I believe there is 2 different diameters. Then lube er up and give er.
