1971 402 fuel issue?
I tried getting my 1971 Cheyenne 402 started today. Put on a new starter, put 5 gallons of fresh 93 octane in the tank, and put a good battery in it,
I can't get her running. She will run if I put some gas in the carb (over a dozens times I did this, thinking I could get her going), but than stalls. I changed the filter, she isn't getting gas. Think the fuel pump needs to be replaced? I haven't started her in quite awhile. Suggestions? |

I would check the fuel pump to make sure it's pumping-you can isolate the fuel pump by disconnecting the fuel line from the pump that comes from the tank and connect a rubber hose into a can of gas and see if the pump flows fuel to the carb-if no flow then the pump is probably bad. If this set up works, the tank or fuel line needs cleaning-hope this helps.

I helped a start a Ford 292 I built in a 56 F100. We had the same problem, turned out mud dobbers plugged up the fuel line on the truck. Also want to make sure you are venting the vank. Hope this helps.

Re: 1971 402 fuel issue?
i'd disconnect the fuel line from carb , put fuel line into container and turn over engine to see if the pump is pumping fuel
if you have a 4barrel quadrajet carb there is a fuel filter inside the carb body that should b checked if the truck sat outside there maybe water in the gas if tank was completely empty 5gallons might not b enough gas for the fuel pickup to get gas to the pump

Disconnect the line from the tank at the fuel pump. Then run a length of fuel hose from the pump to a gas can. If it picks it up, you know the problem is between the fuel tank and the pump. If it doesn't, then it's most likely the pump.

I almost hope it is the pump. Probably easier to deal with than lines and tank. |

Re: 1971 402 fuel issue?
If it is the pump it's not a bad job and the pump was 27 dollars I just did my pump tonight on the exact truck well 71 402 , I didn't have to trouble shoot mine was pumping gas but was weeping gas out of the weep hole.

Re: 1971 402 fuel issue?
what is 3rd fuel line hooked to my stock 402 fuel pump? (large canister looking pump). I am not getting fuel through it with fresh gas line hooked to larger fuel inlet line. Do I need to do something with the smaller line?

It's a return line.

Re: 1971 402 fuel issue?
Do I need to put it in the loop to get pump working or can I leave it hocked to tank ( bypassing tank with gas can and cleared fuel line)

Re: 1971 402 fuel issue?
You can leave it unhooked, but be aware gas is going to come out of it if your pump is working.
