6 lug to 5 lug axles?

i have a 1971 that has the suspension from a earlier 6lug not sure what year.
it is a 12 bolt rear end and i think it is from 67-70 range.
can i just pull the axles from a 71 or later and slide them in to make the truck a 5 lug again or are the axles wrong length

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug axles?

If I remember right the 71-2 axles are about 1/2 inch too wide, but speedway makes an axle conversion kit for like $500. Probably cheaper to just find a different rear end though.

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug axles?

The only 6-lug coil spring rearend housing that will accept 71-72 5-lug axles is the 1970 6-lug rearend.
They are the same width as the 71-72 rearends.
The 67-69 6-lug rearends are approx. 3/4" per side narrower.

Take a backing plate-to-backing plate measurement.
55.5" will not work.
57" will work.

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug axles?

If you happen to have the "narrower" 6-lug rearend,... you have two choices:
1) swap out the entire rearend for a 71-72 rearend.
2) install aftermarket 5-lug axles.

Look at Moser Engineering for aftermarket axles.

Cool Re: 6 lug to 5 lug axles?

check out CPP for conversion axles for the 63-69 55.5" axles, here is the info that I have for the axle set

conversion axle set 67-68
part number 6369rac-5
price $289

website link http://www.classicperform.com/Store/.../6369RAC-5.htm

thats the axle set that I have purchased for my build. I am currently in Afghanistan, so I have not had the opportunity to verify the fit.

had some long talks with customer service about the axles, and he assured me that they would work.

keep us informed

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug axles?

I got my kit from brothers. At first I cut down the stubs and re-drilled the flanges and drums on my 6 lug axles but after all that work(I wasnt totally happy with the results) the kit seemed like a steal. Does anyone know what these type kits use for drums? They seem like 73-87 drums.
