Need some info, looking at truck

Hi all, I have been lurking here for awhile. I don`t even have a chevy(started with fords, now I have a couple of chryslers, but I don`t have much brand loyalty yet.), I got here looking at Frizzle Fry`s Driftbeam project. Anyway, I was trolling craigs for a new truck(my old dodge is about done), and I found this. Here is the CL add text:

1971 1 ton chevy 4x4 -
sbc, havent tried to start it, last time it was on the rd was 99, parked since,

dully
eaton rear
front has huge hubs and lockouts
4 speed
205 transfer case
no bed
frame is solid, one cross member has some rust
HD front bumper with spare mounted there
has the chrome grill with blue bowtie all in very good shape
motor is supposably a 309 ?? not a 307, but not sure havent ran the numbers
body isnt real bad, front clip and doors have been replaced at one time
inner fenders are made out of 1/8 inch steel, nice job done on them
have a title

/Add. I am trying to get pictures now, but I am curious if this was a factory combo, or if someone Frankenstein-ed this truck together. No shame in that, I just would like to know.

Thanks,
Johnson

no one ton 4X4 trucks built in 67 - 72.
it may well be a mutt. A 309 isn't anything I've ever heard of, GM or otherwise.
Where is this rig located? What part of ohio?

chevy NEVER made a 309 is the eaton a full floating ? I could ask you a thousand questions that I am sure you wouldnt know BUT it would depend on condition and price what kind of skill level do you have if you think there are problems that you cant handle or cant pay to have fixed let it pass

I kinda figured that, but it would be cool. I`ve always liked the 67-72 body style the best. I figure this guy doesn`t know much about chevy engines. The truck is on the Zanesville CL, but has no pics up. I`m going to call tomorrow.

I`ve never heard of a 309 either. I assume the rear is a full floater, being a dually and all. The guy isn`t asking much. It can`t take much more work than my dodge would, and it`s probably better looking

Thanks for the info guys,
Johnson

Re: Need some info, looking at truck

For the price he is asking I don't think you can go wrong.
His ad says the frame is sold, I assume he means solid but probably something you should clarify.
Engine is probably a 307 that was rebuilt, maybe bored .010 giving it the 309 they are claiming. Just an idea.

Again, at that price he is asking I don't think you can go wrong.

Re: Need some info, looking at truck

Ya, if I get a picture and it`s just a drivetrain and body I`m going to feel stupid....

I`m going to give the truck some serious consideration. I know I`m preaching to the choir, but sbc`s are really tough. A friend and I were once given a `75 K20. It hadn`t ran in 8 years, hadn`t moved in 10 or better. Was missing one spark plug. We gave it some fresh gas and a new battery cable and that SOB fired right up. We drove it to his house. Ended up selling it for $500, it was rusted beyond repair.
