Re: Very frustrated

See if you get power to the starter would be my first check.

Even though you jumped the main lead, the starter may not have any juice from the ignition lead.

Also, Can you turn the engine by hand?

Re: Very frustrated

Check the neutral safty switch too. I at one point managed to bump mine and didn't know I put it out of adjustment. park and neutal no worky, but rev. and drive it would start. I felt like an a$$ after a few days of testing wires and forgot I moved the lever into drive and turned my key to discover this...

Re: Very frustrated

Is there a chance there is a fusible link in the wiring to the starter?

Re: Very frustrated

Do you have the wire on the correct post of the starter solenoid? Not the hot wire from the battery... but the wire that comes down fronm the engine harness.

Re: Very frustrated

It has got to be the neutral safety switch if you have replaced the switch and it still gives you nothing, not even a bump on the starter.

Re: Very frustrated

I dont know if your truck has one but there is a trigger switch for the manual shift trucks, I think it is close to the shifter, maybe that is only for the 4speed. I read this on another thread so I am just spewing what I read.

Re: Very frustrated

Mine is a four speed...where is this trigger switch?......O I also hooked battery cables to the battery and took my starter off, and I got the gear to jump up once but then after that it wouldn't do it anymore.

Re: Very frustrated

Don't know on this trans, but it should be a switch that it incorporated (threaded) into the trans (kind of like a reverse light switch), possibly near the shifter linkage.

I would look around the trans and try to find an electrical plug/wiring that is going to it. If there is one, it is probably a back-up light switch. If there are two, one would probably be a neutral switch.

Just a guess though.

Don't you to take this the wrong way but, is your battery fully charged? I often overlook the simplest things.

Re: Very frustrated

When you took the starter and solenoid off the truck and applied juice - does the solenoid kick to engage and then the starter doesn't spin? or does the solenoid leg not even kick to engage?

Either could be due to low batt - but if you're checking it with a fully charged battery (like from another running car or something) then I would replace the solenoid.

Agree with all other comments - ESPECIALLY the neutral safety switch - fell into that trap myself once, almost ripped my hair out after a rapid weekend rebuild one weekend to make it to work on Monday - and after wasting about 36 hours, I shifted into Park, and vrooom. Wanted to scream. Anyhoo - if you are bench testing the starter and solenoid OUT of the truck with a good battery, and it still no workie, then I think you've found your problem - because that takes all the other possibilities out of the loop.

Just a guess, but the thick one is probably the speedo cable.

Re: Very frustrated

Ok I checked for the neutral switch on my tranny, I could not find it all I found was my speedo cable and back up lights, It s SM465 if that helps, but I also figured out that when I turn my key to on or ACC, Ill turn my fan on and when I pull my lights to come on, the fan slows down a whole bunch.

Re: Very frustrated

Ok heres a pic of the brown wire that I have no clue what it plugs into...its starts at my ignition and goes through the fuse box and then through the big plug in, then into this tiny plug in and I don't know where it goes.

These are the N/S sw. wires and probably your problem. The purple wires are the starter circuit and the green the B/U light wires.

Re: Very frustrated

If you tie the purple ones together it should start. It will start in gear is the only downfall. The green ones you can extend to the trans b/u light sw.

Re: Very frustrated

What happened when you did this:

"When you took the starter and solenoid off the truck and applied juice - does the solenoid kick to engage and then the starter doesn't spin? or does the solenoid leg not even kick to engage?"

If you apply power directly to the starter, bypassing everything, and it does not spin then you need to get the starter tested. You need to get this working before you continue. After that look at some of the wiring diagrams on the forums and make sure everything else is wired correctly. You should do this systematically, one step at a time, from the ignition key switch and trace power out to the starting circuit.
