Re: Got rear ended!
glad your okay.. I had a girl run into me while i was already stoped, I didnt have a bumper on my truck. I didnt have any damage on mine though, few little scratches on my tailgate but she went right under my truck and the frame of my truck just peeled her hood back an dug into the engine. That car was spitting radiator fluid all over the place.

Re: Got rear ended!
Ya debating on a new sport bumper but, it appears this one did its job well. Also noticed it knocked out my rust parts on the back finally lol. Wonder if that will be covered with new rust filling..

Re: Got rear ended!
Dang man, that sucks! Glad everybody's ok though. I had the same thing happen to me round Christmas, Toyota pickup slammed into me, trashed my tailgate and shoved my bumper into and through my left rear quarter.....insurance gave me $1,200. Bad news is, since it was my dad's truck, he took the check. Good news is, he gave me the truck! So now I've got a free truck with a messed up, butt-ugly back end, and I cant afford to fix it, lol =P

Re: Got rear ended!
Well this whole thing has gone nowhere since this has happend. They want to total my truck. The only way to keep it would be to get a salvage title. I really dont want to go that route. Does anyone have any advice? They are offering like $3400. I will no what the buy back is tomorrow.

Re: Got rear ended!
Sounds like they are offering you a pretty fair price, maybe a little low. I would be looking into the buyback as a rebuilt title isn't going to hurt you bad on value for a truck that old. You can probably fix it yourself with a sport bumper for $500-700.

Re: Got rear ended!
Generally speaking, the insurance companies only have to pay the "fair market value" for your vehicle. Unless you can prove that you have a true restored classic and can document sales for similar vehicles at a higher price, then you will likely won't get more than what they are offering. The unfortunate truth is that most of us who sink a lot of $$ into our old vehicles find out that the market does not support a high price on resale or insurance claim. You can get classic vehicle insurance with agreed value, but that usually means you can't use the vehicle as a daily driver. I would not worry about the salvage value designation, since you will have documentation to show the extent of the damage and reason for it to the next potential buyer.
On the flip side, having purchased a lot of new vehicles, I can tell you that first year depreciation and sales tax (if you have it in your state) alone will far exceed what you will typically spend in keeping an old truck running and looking good. In the past, I have been able to buy and sell an new truck or SUV every 6 months and break even, but I think those days are gone with the current economic depression we are in. I am now thinking about keeping the old beater truck and renting an economy car on those occasions when I really need a reliable and presentable vehicle - seems cheaper than owning another vehicle. Rental cars can be had for $20 per day with unlimited mileage and I can rent a car in my neighborhood for $5-$8 an hour for trips around town. Times are changing. |

Re: Got rear ended!
talk to the insurance company and tell them you ARE NOT surrendering the truck to them. if they never get posession of it, there's no way to get a salvage title. they can't just change your title to a salvage title. tell them you want to keep it and get some money too. they did that on my 78, they just gave me the money minus scrap value, which was only $1200 total.
If you expect to get full value for these trucks, you need stated value insurance. it's the only way to be happy with your insurance. The reason insurance is so cheap on these OLD trucks is that in case of a total loss, they don't have to pay much money out. somewhere in your paperwork, you signed that they are only responsible for fair market value and nothing more. if the value wasn't agreed upon when you got the truck insured, they can do whatever they want to. however some companies will give you more money just to shut you up, if they even care that much. regular insurance is terrible for vehicles that have been fixed up or restored, unless its an old work truck or something. if your truck has any value above bluebook, you better get stated value insurance and quick people. Re: Got rear ended!
X2 - except that in your state there are probably laws regarding when a vehicle must be declared a salvage title. Usually, that has to do with the extent of the damage and whether or not the damage exceeds the value of the vehicle - hence, the salvage designation. I have read that in some states that if the vehicle is driveable after an accident, then a salvage title might be avoided, but the accident will, of course, be recorded in carfax, etc. Given the looks of your truck, it is hard for me to see $3400 damage - how did they come up with that figure - sounds like you could fix it yourself a lot cheaper than that.

Re: Got rear ended!
Not sure how it works over there but i am looking for an Avalanche and I found a nice one that was branded salvage but is now repaired and has a rebuilt title and since it has a rebuilt title my insurance company won't even insure it . i was glad I called and asked first or I would have an expensive truck to use as a flower garden
