Cali Smog
Just ran my 83 thru the smog test for registration renewal and she passed again, Cali smog laws SUCK!!! spent the weekend getting her ready with new cap/rotor, plugs and cables, oil change, all new filters etc, etc.
come to find out they did away with the 30 year exemption, this would have been my final smog check but thanks to Governator Arnold, my semi annual checks will continue for as long as I own the truck Uploaded with ImageShack.us "The Snake Pit" Last edited by Malo83; 06-20-2011 at 03:42 PM. |

Re: Cali Smog
Yup. Last year at the emissions station the boss guy came out of the office with a flashlight and spent 20 minutes checking out everything under the hood of my 83 BB in Tucson. Fortunately, all the original smog parts are in place, but I don't know how all of the other old squares get past emissions in this town since they all seem to have the smog parts missing.

Re: Cali Smog
That is the reason I have contemplated finishing the 400sb and putting it in my 76 and getting a diesel for my 79 but I will most likely just put it in my 79 and hope for the best. I hate Cali emission laws

Re: Cali Smog
Move to Florida we don't have an inspection at all. Some are running around with just headers carbon canisters missing smog pumps dismantled. Its heaven.

Re: Cali Smog
Yes, get a diesel. As long as it's 1997 and older, CA doesn't smog diesel. Right now, I've got a Cummins in my 90 Suburban and it has more power than you know what to do with.

Re: Cali Smog
I've never had a problem with the smog inspection. Modified my exhaust running dual cats and never had a problem. Smogged it last December, running on seven cylinders, and it came out clean as a whistle.

Re: Cali Smog
Yes the 'sperminator' really screwed the pooch(literally) for Cali with the rolling exemption recall. "Rumor has it" that Jerry Brown is thinking of reinstating the years back to '65? But like I said, it's rumor from a local smog tech.

Re: Cali Smog
No offense to anyone on here from cali but if there is one state i'm glad i don't live in it's cali.I live in northern arizona which is emissions exempt i've had every vehicle i've owned registered up here i wouldn't mess with emissions here in this state for anything.I've always said that if arizona wants to do anything then implement actual vehicle inspections rather than smog testing because i've seen some vehicles on the roads in arizona that could pass a smog test all day long but had barely working brakes, turn signals that didn't work, exhaust and other parts falling off and generally had no business on the road.I think that would help with alot of the vehicle issues on arizona roads. It sure would get alot of unsafe vehicles off the roads.

Re: Cali Smog
I used to register my cuda every other year lol. When it wasn't the year to smog it I registered it. But it's been sitting for the past 20 years
One other note: The smog testing has begun for Diesels in California and for heavy duty diesel they are required to put on a particulate trap for the tune of 12 to 20 thousand dollars each!!!!!! And get this, you can get it paid for with a state grant!!!!!!!! If you can't get one to work on your oldrer truck or diesel powered equipment, you can get a grant for the state for up to $50K!!!! Yes I said diesel powered equipment (backhoes graders and so on, or generators). And you wonder where our state coffers are going and why you cannot get a job in Cali. Thanks Arnold for allowing my property values to drop by 2/3z. Any you said that you are beholding to nobody. Well is an environmentalist anybody? Still glad my 80 C-1 runs incredibly lean |

Re: Cali Smog
I really dont think its a big deal passing smog in Cali...most of hese dochebag cops dont really know the difference between a 75 or 80 C10 as in they cant get you for a referee ticket, meaning you dont have to take your truck to the "main smog station"...which I had to to with my Evos and Subarus numerous times.
All you SoCal guys need to do is get friendly with your local smog shop. Been passing my cars for 100 bucks for the past 4 years. Come on guys its only every 2 tears. Fu*ck Arnold! |

Your local police are not doing their jobs. Obviously unsafe vehicles can and should be ticketed by the townies and county mounties. It's not popular to DE ticket the bozak that drives on bald tires, with missing lights, or a bashed up windshield ( I'm not talking about a crack either ). But be careful what you wish for. You don't want "Safety" inspections. I lived in 7 states in the Northeast with "safety inspections". Yes they inspected brakes, lights, wipers, and exhaust. They also check for rust anywhere on the body and cracks in the glass over 3" in length. I'm not interested in a government flunky telling me that the crack, that can't be seen from the drivers seat and never will because it's top to bottom just 1/2" off the gasket on the passenger side, means I need a $300 piece of glass for my $200 Subaru beater. |

Re: Cali Smog
We have safety inspections twice a year and unless you have it done you can't register your vehicle, but we dont have smog, I know what I would rather have, I know my truck is safe.

Re: Cali Smog
I dont mind smogging my trucks so much, but the way I see it, the only thing that matters is what come out the tail pipe and vapor system. Why worry about whats under the hood? Visual inspection should not happen.
