I've built a new floor for the back of my suburban. I made two access panels. One is to get to the gas tank/air tank and the other is to get to the battery/air compressor. I was thinking about using some of those "piano" hinges. I'm not too excited about using them. I'm trying to come up with another option. I'm also thinking about ditching the hinge idea completely and just tap some holes around it and screw it down. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance.

With that much weight you'd probably want an actuator to lift it. Other than a piano hinge like found on truck toolboxes I'm not sure what else you could use. Looks good though!!!

If your just talking a lift out panel for occasional access what about 4 old school style hood pins?

I would just drill and tap the holes.....if you are anything like me (last I checked you were) any type of rattling from the hinges would me nuts.

How heavy is that piece? How about some rare earth magnets?

Its not that heavy. That's 3/4" angle iron with 16ga sheetmetal on it.

Id throw some thin foam strips with a sticky side on it from the home depot on it and use the magnets to hold it down.. Some of those magnets can smash a finger pretty good..

I would just bolt it down. I agree with the rattling. or use dzus fasteners but bolts would be easier. Those wheel houses look like early bronco inner fenders could have saved some fab time

I was going to use tubs but then I saw the "Pops 72 cheyenne dropmember build" that superflysteiny did and decided to do it that way instead.

Plus I'd insulate the heck out of all that, with stuff like hush mat or spray on bed liner to protect it from the elements.

I'd use weld-on 2x2 butt hinges with removable pins, and secure it with draw latches. Some resilient weather strip under the lip will seal things up, and keep it from rattling. The hardware should cost less than $10 per panel. These are probably available at the same place that you buy your steel.

Judging from the look of your panels, it would be difficult to use dzus fasteners. How would you mount the tabs?

why not try the 1/4 turn cam lock fasteners that are used in the aviation world. easy to access and they can be flush mounted.
