1969 C30 Car Hauler with sentimental value.

Just last Sunday found this truck while searching Craigslist for trucks to buy to part out or what ever. I clicked on the posting and sure enough it was a truck that I could not live with out. My late uncle Neil built this truck back in 1977-1978 to haul his cars-trucks to his wrecking yard. I remember it very well from day one. Unfortunately we lost him in 2002. Knowing his heath was terminal he sold this before passing. It was offered to me and I declined as at the time I was not into these trucks. But as time passed I got into these trucks and his importance to me grew stronger. My cousins, other uncles, and long time friends all have memories driving this truck while working for him. The buyer bought it and took it home and parked it. It was never driven or used since the last car it hauled. It still had all the chains and binders and misc untouched. I looked at it, and struck a deal. Money was no object at this point and the buyer knew that as he knew both of us as it turned out. I took the carb off and took it home to rebuild it and then drove it home last Thursday. Amazingly enough it drove great and everything worked fine. I took it to a friend's house to store for the time being he drove this truck when it was new. It will get a complete resto back to the original condition from day one. It started life as a C30 cab-chassis SRW 133" wb. He length-ed the frame and built the ramp set up. Can't wait till I have time to tear into it! The pic with the model was done by a friend that drove this truck over thirty years ago while working for him. He has kept it all this time. Kinda funny I had to store it a his house as I don't have room on my 5 acres. We surprised him and his wife for a very cool moment.
Thanks for reading, Tom

My next truck to find with any luck will be his 67 C30 DRW tow truck with the Holmes unit.

Re: 1969 C30 Car Hauler with sentimental value.

I have learned recently that this had a 70 Chevelle LS6 when it was built. My cousin has the twisted up driveline to prove it! Any one got a LS6 for sale???

Very cool story indeed. I can't wait to see it finished up. Any more details on the truck as it sits? motor, trans, ect. We might need a shot of the SPID on the inside of the glove box door to get all the options. I like the color combo. The Sandle interior goes pretty good with the green.

Re: 1969 C30 Car Hauler with sentimental value.

I have been working on preparing parts before I tear it down. So far I have restored all the front suspension including a cross member. I have hot tanked, acid dipped, media blasted and painted everything. Also new ball joints and the norm. I parted a 72 C30 DRW with disc brakes so it was a great donor to get all the disc brake stuff. Next on the list was to rebuild a rear end. So I took a later 14 bolt DRW and rebuilt it from end to end. I had to change the shock mounts. Here awhile back I went up near Seattle and bought a garage kept one owner 69 C20 for a cab and front clip. Mine is rusted out and dinged up. The 69 C20 was a very nice truck with a bad 350engine. The box was perfect and it will go on my 72 Cheyenne Super project. I plan to detail up the cab with interior and transfer it over. It is the correct color and the black interior is perfect! It also has tach, tilt, and GM dealer add AC . The truck will get a 454 which also came with the 69 C20 donor truck. Hope to get some time for it this fall!! Thanks, Tom

Re: 1969 C30 Car Hauler with sentimental value.

Sounds awesome! I know how great the parts look after you blast and dip them so can't wait to see that frame together! And definitely the best way to do it....parts trucks....much cheaper than sourcing all the parts individually! And usually can make back a lot of the investment through parting out the leftovers...

Re: 1969 C30 Car Hauler with sentimental value.

Hey Jonathan, Ya buying trucks to part definatly helps out the builds. The only problem is all the cool stuff that I should be selling seems to get rat holed for the projects or the thought I might need it down the road....
