Does anyone know?
I am restoring a 1974 1/2 Cheyenne Super with factory 454 (short bed). The truck had the wrong transmission when I got it, I found the correct 400 transmission from another 74 crew cab. Does anyone know if this truck was supposed to have a 2 piece drive shaft? Looks like it had a place a hanger bearing?? If so anyone know where I might find one??

Re: Does anyone know?
I believe it had something to do with the transmission ordered. HD trans gets 2 pc driveshaft, I say this because my shortbed with the SM465 has the 2 pc driveshaft

Re: Does anyone know?
It has to do with keeping the driveline below it's "critical speed" (the point at which the driveshaft starts whipping like a jump rope). Critical speed is determined by driveline length, rear axle rpm and anticipated top speed.
Apparently this particular combination met the requirements for a two piece shaft. K

Re: Does anyone know?
I can also verify for you that they did have 2 drive shafts on factory swb bb trucks.
Back in 92 I had a completely original 77gmc bb truck with 2 drive shafts. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Does anyone know?
The reason for the 2 piece is because all the truck 400's has a hd bolt in yoke instead of a slip yoke like the 350's , the 2 piece has a slip joint behind the carrier bearing , I'm going to do away with the 2 pc and install a slip yoke on the trans,

Re: Does anyone know?
Thanks all for your input. I think I am going to go with a one piece shaft with a slip joint like on a 4x4.. Does this sound like it will work??

Re: Does anyone know?
It will work fine , did the same thing to a buddys shortbed with a 400 and a 454 , just take the bolt on yoke off and install the slipyoke ,we had the shaft shortened from the 350 trans that was in the truck,
