Rust free cabs ?

I had a guy come over and look at my cab to see what he would charge me for fixing all the problem areas. Cab supports, rocker, cab corners, and a little in to the floor. He said any where from 1,500 to 3,000. Just for fixing the rust no paint. Ah holy crap ! I have been looking at some cab that have been going for 300 dollars.

Is there a good place to go to get Rust free cabs or lower then what i would pay to fix mine up.

Then will I need a title for that cab ? Since i already titled my truck?

Re: Rust free cabs ?

head west and south, you'll find people scrapping entire trucks for a little rust in a cab corner.
Depending on how shady you are, the cab swap could be quite easy, or, lots of paperwork, or some where inbetween. This is a question to call your DMV about.

Re: Rust free cabs ?

I surfed craigslist and found one for 250 within 20 miles of home... It's got a title but I'd rather keep my original title, not sure what I'm gonna do there yet, probably just have to take both titles and cabs to state patrol and see what they say.

There are just two pop rivets separating you from dealing with the DMV. I'm just saying.

From past experience (searches) it seems like Texas might be the best place to look.

Re: Rust free cabs ?

i wouldn't worry about the title problem. there is no law that says you can't repair a vehicle, plus, if a tree falls on your cab and the rest of the truck is in good shape, can they really blame you for replacing the cab? Trucks were made to take apart easy since they are for work and panels get beaten. It is very common for trucks to contain parts from 3 or more salvage vehicles. I wouldn't consider it shady, as long as the parts are legal and title is real.

Re: Rust free cabs ?

It is more common to get a cab with no title than it is to get one with
removing, let alone swapping, the vin is illegal
The cab, while just a body part, is the only piece that has the full VIN (except the SPID, which is not considered a legal ID)
Some states are easy to deal with, others are not.
This is why I ALWAYS tell people to look into it before they do anything.

Re: Rust free cabs ?

For those that don't like drilling out rivets and replacing them due to law, there's no law against changing the entire door pillar that the plates are attached to. I've seen many rusted out trucks and it'd be easier to replace the whole side Just saying....

Really with these old trucks, there are 1000s out there with mix and matched parts and honestly I don't think many care as long as the title is fully legal and the truck isn't stolen.

Re: Rust free cabs ?

Not that your looking in CA, but just cuz someone posts its been a cali truck its whole life doesnt mean its rust free.. my truck came out of san bernadino and it needed rockers, inner and outer, floor pan on driverside footwell, both kick panels, both cab corners, driver side front pillar, and rear cab support. lol Only decided to try to save it cuz my dad gave it to me. Good luck with yours.

Re: Rust free cabs ?

Have several body guys look at your cab ,you might find someone that likes replacing rusted panels for a fair price. The shop I use makes his money off insurance work but really loves working on old stuff. He told me up front if I was patient with him he would do my whole truck for less than most wanted for just rust repairs. When he is waiting on parts for the insurance work he works on my truck. He has decided to do a frame off on mine to make sure its up to his standards .He has painted my wifes 72 Malibu twice so far and does great work.
