Re: not starting ?

Take off the air cleaner and operate the throttle at the carb. Seeing gas squirt? yes? Stop! Don't flood it. Move to the ignition. Pull a spark plug wire and put a screw driver in the end and hold it close enough to a metal part to make a spark plug style gap. Have a Compitent person who knows what the term "STOP!" means if you get shocked. If you have gas and spark, on paper it should run (minus compression). Get this far and let us know what you found.

Re: not starting ?

Choke working!! Cold engine needs a little richer mixture when first starting.

Re: not starting ?

^^^ Which reminds me...pull a plug to see if it soaking wet. Sometimes gas takes a while (a coupla days) to evaporate if its good and flooded.

At the speed of light and thousands of volts "Stop" was not what I yelled when I got zapped!

If all of the above suggestions resolve disregard:

Here's what I've experienced in the past with these old trucks for similar symptoms:
Clogged filter in the gas tank.
Clogged filter outside the tank. PO had installed one under the cab and it was full of sediment.
Clogged filter inside the carb inlet.
Weak fuel pump pressure. Replaced it.
Extremely restricted fuel line between tank and fuel pump.

Re: not starting ?

thanks guy. i got it to start(and stay running) today. the filter inside the carb was plugged. i plan on taking the in tank one out and checking tomorrow. all my problems started cause my gas gage wasnt working. pulled it out and it was rusted solid and the float had a huge hole in it. changed to a different tank and that gage worked. then truck started running funny and found out the inline filter was plugged. decided to bite the bullet and replace all the lines and filter. so now hopefully i will have it solved for good. i also think i need to adjust the idle, seems a little low when waiting at a light(stalled a few times too).carb was also new(rebuilt unit)less than 500 miles ago.

Re: not starting ?

Just think, if that were a newer vehicle you would be checking codes, looking for sensors and part numbers! And thats after you take the cover off the engine. If these old engines aren't running, its fuel or spark. Glad you got it running....great engine the I6!
