not sure, but think trans is a gonner

driving home from work today. 18hours later....stopped to get a beer and go shower. and when i pulled out of liquer store, gave gas, and heard rattleing noises. like if something had fallen off car.
got to stop sign and when i gave gas, it moved slowely. naturally, got a red light.
when i stopped. there was no going forward. reved only. dropped into 2 and 1 to see if anything would happen and nothing. heard more rambling. like if things were grinding up and falling out/off...
put in reverse, and was able to get off road into local gun shop. looked under car, all looked good.
back in drive and nothing. but then i dropped it all the way down....shifter. and got moving. was able to crawl couple hundred feet to my house.

so trans gone??
if so, what will it cost me to replace???

thanks for any help. figures, work a second job to try and get ahead. and then boom

It could be the torque converter. It sounds like it took a dive on you and more than likely took out the rest of the transmission. Prices vary depending on shop and materials with shift kits, parts etc.

jegs sells tranny's for usually cheaper than the rebuild of your current, that's the route I'm going

Re: not sure, but think trans is a gonner

How much would rebuild cost?
Should I attempt to drop it and have it looked at?
Haven't had time to search much yet. Back at work.
Thanks for replies.

Call around and ask about prices with warranty with and with out taking it out. Some places won't give a warranty unless they install it. Also call people that might have had good or bad experiences with shops in your area.

I just went through the same exact scenario with my tranny a few weeks ago... and it needed a re-build. It just happened out of nowhere too, no slipping or weird shifting.. just clunk, whine, grind, no go.

It cost me $600 for the re-build with a new torque converter and flexplate.

BTW.. mine is a TH350

Yup, that's it. I had my dad and a good friend helping me though. It wasn't really too hard, just real bulky to maneuver from under the truck. We had to use a floor jack, a transmission jack would have been a lot better, but couldn't get a hold of one.

After installing it, I had to take it to the guy who re-built it and had to have him do some adjusting and stuff, because it wasn't shifting right, but that's normal though, because it was hard for him to determine shift points and stuff when it's just a flat bench re-build and no R&R.

good luck to you!

Cool Re: not sure, but think trans is a gonner

Check out Harbor Freight for a tranny jack if there's one near you, the most expensive one is cheaper than paying someone to remove it.

Re: not sure, but think trans is a gonner

The trans in my suburban went to hell recently and I ordered a newly rebuilt one from bowtie overdrives out of cali. Real good company, they dyno test all of their transmissions and also vehicle test them. They have "mule" vehicles they install every transmission they build into and actually drive them to make sure everything works as it should. Cooling system, lockup, etc. I think the price is right for what you get. It's worth it for me because I plan on having my suburban for a long time. Here is a link to their level 2 unit I got. It performs great and has a nice warranty also. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...m.php?ITEMID=8

Re: not sure, but think trans is a gonner

You can tell by the pan shape on which tranny it is.

I am getting ready to yank mine too. The front pump hosing is leaking on mine (I think)
