Stepside bed

Does anyone know if the stepside beds from early 60's trucks or 73-87 trucks the same as the ones for 67-72? I know the fenders are different, but i'm wondering about the bedsides. I know that the tail gates are the same for the 73-87's. Thanks Josh

Re: Stepside bed

With all of the bed-swapping I've seen over the years, I see no reason that you couldn't use the earlier bed, and install the correct fenders for your truck. I know the fenders changed in '73, and that they were different from '55 (second series) thru '66, when they changed. So, I see no reason to be worried.

Re: Stepside bed

I think the 73-87 bed are a bit different, check the FAQ's there's a thread in there about putting a 73-87 step on a 67-72, I remember it didn't just bolt in, some slight modification was necessary.

Re: Stepside bed

A 73-87will work, but you have to add a section to the front where the step bolts on, and you also have to re-drill fender mounting holes, and re-fill the old ones. I purhased new Mar-K bedsides a few years ago for about $350 each with the polished stainless strips. They were spot on to oem specs. Money well spent, and you don't have to do all the body work. I did add a reinforcement into the rear stake pockets for taillight mounting. Good luck.

Re: Stepside bed

the beds are the same along with the tailgates ... the only difference is the steps and fenders. you can redrill the fender mounting holes and you are good to go.

I will disagre with you. The step on the newer beds sits up higher on the bed, therefore you have to add a section to mount an early set of steps.

Re: Stepside bed

The beds from 47 to 87 are the same dimensions. Where they differ is the front side panels where the steps mount and the rear cross brace. AS long as you take the bed with all the same year attachments (fenders & steps) it is pretty much a bolt on.

However if you want to use a 73 up bed on an older model or vice versa, the bedsides where the steps mount is different. the 73-87 do not drop as low, so you'll have to modify it for the older beds. to go the otherway you will have to shorten the step mounts.

I did the board writeup on how mine was done taking an 84 bed and making it work on my 70.

Re: Stepside bed

There are a lot of differences from one series to the next. Some are subtle, some are significant. This article discusses these differences. http://www.mar-k.com/bed_side_interchange_gm.html

Hope this helps
