A little info please.
Hi all, .
This isn't really about my 68. I have an even more pressing issue with my 2002 sonoma 4x4 . I am getting ready to rebuild the front end in this thing so as to not be killed on the freeway from a freed ball joint . My question is this. How do you get the pitman arm off of the steering box given that it is mounted 1/2" from the top of the front cross member? If any of y,all have ever done one of these , I could really use the input. I looked at a book at the local library, but it was no help. All it had in it was the 2 wheel drive numbers. The rest of the front end is a breeze. Thanks for any help I am given with this one. |

Loosen/take off the gear box so you may move it enough to get a pitman puller on it? I will have to look at mine next time it is on the hoist.

Thanks Gwayo. I kind of thought that was the case. I wasn't sure if there was a special trick to that or what. After doing the blower motor for the a/c it goes to figure that there would be some kind of trick there as well. .......
And to think that i wanna put a 4.8 in this thing! Not to mention jeep axles. Thanks man. |

the steering box must be unbolted from the frame of the truck, the intermediate shaft and power steering lines can stay attached to the box. then just maneuver the box so you can get the nut off and the puller on

Ok Guys,
The front end on the sonoma is done. What a freaking nightmare!The correct puller for this job is teh one that has teh stud on the inside instead the back of the puller. (100.00+change at oreillys. Didn't buy it. 11.95, harbor freight). we did get the arm off after removing the box from the frame. the steering shaft has just enough extension to it to get the pitman shaft just past the cross member. it could stand to be about 1" longer. Thanks for all the help i got with this. On the upside i did find out why the 4wd was blowing fuses. If you have a 4x4 "S" type you may want to check this. The wires that go to the hub sensor on my truck were fastened to the powersteering pump behind the pulley. the retainer that held them broke and the wires fell forward and were rubbed in two by the back of the pulley. still can't figure why they were in such a dumb place. aw well, it's fixed and thats all that i care about.
