Steering Wheel Hell
Allright, i hated to have to do this. Because it really is a silly post.
HOWEVER, I cannot get my steering wheel off. That sucker has been on the truck for 40 years and does not want to let go. So here is what i have done so far..... 1.) Removed center nut. 2.) Removed 3 screws for horn piece and removed parts. 3.) ATTEMPTED to hand pull the steering wheel off. (not happening) 4.) Neighbor stopped by (imagine a BIGGER Mr. T). He almost yanked the whole steering column out. Still no luck. 5.) Made a "simple" bolt puller. Destroyed the piece of metal..... 6.) Let it set in WD40 all night and went to O'Reillys and bought a steering wheel puller. 30 minutes later threw it in the trash as it was bent and the center bolt and threads had been stripped because of the amount of torq put on it.... STILL WILL NOT COME OFF!!! It actually hasnt budged at all!!! So what am i missing? Im not aware of a cotter pin or anything?? All that i know left to do is go rent a heavy duty puller and see if that works. I AM OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS!!!!! |

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
get a otc steering wheel puller or snap on , mac. there are 2 sizes you might have to use the bigger one but i would try a quality puller first

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
You will never get it off without a real pulled.

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
with center nut installed/ sit in seat take your legs and pushup on the steering wheel with your knees at the same time take a hammer and a wood block and a quick forcefull rap to the shaft will loosen the wheel from the taper /remove nut lify off wheel
a usefull thing to learn how to do// i've emoved hundreds of steering wheels like that

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
What Cliff and Quentin said. That's what I do at the U-Pull-It when I have forgotten my steering wheel puller.
RARELY will you get one off by simply pulling on it.

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
I had to put the nut on mine and a piece of brass and whack that sucker with a BFH. wooden block may not be hard enough some times.

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
With that steering wheel between your knees, just watch what you hit with the BFH!

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
Or when you have tension on it with a puller, tap the end of the puller tension bolt.

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
PB Blaster and a puller. I would put the puller on, put some tension on it, smack it a few times, tighten the puller some more, smack it a few more times, etc. I don't think I've ever got one off with sheer strength and I'm pretty strong.

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
Mine didn't have the original wheel, but an OTC wheel puller is what I used. Heck, I still have the el cheapo Superior steering wheel puller I bought a looooong time ago. I don't like it, so I don't use it.
When you use a decent puller (OTC) and the proper bolts that thread into the wheel, then you tighten up the center bolt and put some stress on the puller...then tap the center bolt....it should pop loose.

Re: Steering Wheel Hell
Just put a '67 steering wheel on my '67 to replace a 70s wheel that I didn't like the look of. I used a harmonic balancer puller. I think it was only $20 bucks and it did the steering wheel just fine. You just have to find the right bolts in the kit and away you go. Off in a minute or too. Don't bother man-handling it for that price or borrow a friends for a day.
