My balancer doesn't have a timing mark on it
how do you adjust the timing without having a timing mark on the balancer? I've heard of just turning it and listening by ear, but I'm not really experienced enough to be able to do that. Any ideas?

Make sure your are on the compression stroke not exhaust. Thats it your done. There are different ways to do this but this is the easy way for a stocker motor. |

Re: My balancer doesn't have a timing mark on it
TDC is the exact same place on the balancer weather the compression or exhaust stroke
the proper way is with aid of a piston stop you slowly turn by hand till it is stopped by the piston stop make a referance mark then turn in oppisit direction till you are again stopped by the piston stop make another referance mark/// dead center between those two referance marks is TDC

Re: My balancer doesn't have a timing mark on it
i dont think i know you dont understand the concept of the crank doing two exact same revolutions for each revolution of the camshaft causeing the balancer to b in the exact same place twice
look it up /read a book about timing

yes I know how to degree a cam and set advance or retard on a cam just telling the easy most simple way without getting techy with it.

Re: My balancer doesn't have a timing mark on it
cdowns is correct in both how to find TDC and that the timing mark works on either compression and exhaust stroke......after all it is TDC to the crank. You can hook a timing light to either 1 or 6 cylinder becuase they are 180° apart in the firing order. I have never seen a balancer without a timing mark for a small block, I would bet the line it full of paint and crap. The ring on the balancer could have slipped too. I did work on a Big Block once that had a timing mark on the bottom engine (it had the traditional one too) it was for a motorhome chassis. No way could you see the regular timing mark with the engine running in the motorhome.

Re: My balancer doesn't have a timing mark on it
Alright. So, saying i happen to get the crank at tdc on the exhaust stroke and time the dist to that, and it's at 180* out, just turn the crank another revolution or will it be fine the way it is?
