so my truck is a 1960 so I have the x frame. my question is has anyone modified their frame to run exhaust or even cut the x out?

modifying the frame to fit the exhaust? Um....modify the exhaust to fit the frame usually works better. The older big body gm's had x frames in the early years, they manage to squeeze some decent pipes into.

Are you set on running the exhaust on the inner side of frame rails?

well the exhaust now is outside the frame but I would like to do an x-pipe or both into one 3"

It can be done, but it will require a significant portion of the exhaust to hang below the frame. Is there a particular reason you want an X-pipe?

my 50 chev convertible "X frame" has windows cut in the x on the drivers side for the factory single exhaust... years ago someone cut matching windows on the other side.

another method that I saw on a super low 57 caddy: the exhaust was intergal, and welded into the frame rails, exhaust flex tubing was used in between the manifolds and the front part of the exhaust

I am doing a 60 also.. I have went over this in my head a thousand times. I do have a 60 frame that has the X cut out that someone installed a cross member with holes for exhaust and it appears solid.. I saved it.. for whatever reason I dont want to get rid of it.. I although stayed with the X probably because "its different" than what most do and I tend to be that way. I am going with an inline 6 and I am keeping the torsion front susp.. I have no other way than to drop between the torsion and run outside the frame on one side. I did see this summer a guy that had cut half moons out of his X to allow for exhaust. The way I see these frames built unless you are planning on pulling the front end off the ground in the 1/8 or 1/4 they are strong enough to take the half moon cut and it can be done very clean.. I will check my pics as I took many of what he had done, it was clean and neat and looked great. Not sure what HP he was running but it was tubbed and built.. I saw no other extra added support from his mods to the X..

The X-pipe doesn't provide better flow...it does quiet down the exhaust (which is the primary goal with X-pipes on from the factory since the cross pulses help attenuate noise at lower RPMs) - if that's what you're looking to achieve. Being part of lots of exhaust research (flowbench, CFD modeling and real world) when I worked at Banks Engineering and the X-pipes' scavenging effects don't really occur until the upper RPMs, the range varied according to tubing diameter and distance from the collector.Just my $0.02 if it helps with routing your exhaust.

Mufflers made out of 3 1/2" OD steel driveshaft.
