power steering gear box compatibility(what years work)

Hey guys, I have a 69 Chevy truck with I think around 86 power steering box but the pump is a 69, I found this out while trying to replace my pressure hose for my power steering(the guy welded it...). So now sense there two different fittings on those p.s. pressure lines I'm wondering what would be easiest an cheapest to make this work. I thought about switching the gearing box to a 69 but would I also need new steering components to make it work? Could I switch to the power steering pump but wouldn't I need new brackets and would the pulleys line up? Right now I'm looking at making up a custom line out of the two hoses but don't know if it'll work. Any help would be awesome.

Re: power steering gear box compatibility(what years work)

The truck power steering boxes from '69-'80 all had the SAE inverted flare style fittings. From '81 and up they have the metric size fittings with the O-ring. The pumps of course are corresponding to that. An easy fix is to remove the pump from your engine, and change the pressure fitting in the back of the pump. Be careful as there is a spring behind the fitting. Of course you will need another pump as a donor for the correct fitting.

Even though the 4x4 steering boxes are physically the same and will bolt up, the pitman arms are not interchangeable.

I used the pump, steering box and hoses from a mid 80's C-10. It all bolted right up.

One thing you really need to keep in mind if you change the gear box Plan on not having your sharp turning any longer.Auto zone gives you the cheep box and get your 350.00 box as a core.Never give up your factory gear box of you will do a lot of backing up to make a turn

This is incorrect. I put a later model (Square body) gear box on mine and it still hits the physical stops on the control arm in both directions. I used the pitman arm for a 72.

Glad you got it sorted out. So just to sum it up for others that may find this thread, you have a later model box with the o-ring fittings instead of flair as well as the fitting in the back of the pump and hose from a later model to match the o-ring fitting in the box, correct?

Re: power steering gear box compatibility(what years work)

Yes I have the 80s gear box with a 69 pump. The gear box had the o ring fitting an the pump had the flared so I went to a junk yard with the old piece(to make sure the threads were the same) an took the fitting off of a later power steering pump an put it into my 69 pump, then used a 80s power steering hose.

I never thought of it, I was trying to get it don't before I went to the docs so I ran all over too. Are you putting a earlier box on your truck?

Re: power steering gear box compatibility(what years work)

Ok I have the old 69 manual steering, that takes darn near 5 turns to go from complete left to right. I say a post that from the 80's turck will work, is that true?

My problem if im in a tight space, it takes forever to manuver.
