Value or scrap?
Im finally cleaning out all my extra stuff and tossing a bunch. What do you guys think about this? I have a 68 K20 bare (as in frame only, no springs etc.) frame that the front horns have been chopped off. I have a chunk of cab left with tags. I also have the build sheet and clear Washington title in my name. All of these are numbers matching for a K20 50th Anniversary truck.
Does it have any cash value other than scrap? If no real cash value its going in the cut up scrap pile where I know it has scrap price value.

Re: Value or scrap?
Interesting subject CG.
I would think someone, who could take the effort to add whats missing, and actually resurrect the truck from the bare bones parts left, may be able to own a really rare truck. With great historical value. My own truck has only the frame, cab and rear diff. left and is still a legally documented truck. The effort would be great and dealing with DMV may be a major pain. I think that you have to have a certain percentage of the truck for the title to follow the build. What DMV considers a major portion of the vehicle would be the sticky part. I cant remember, off-hand, what %. If the cab is still somewhat intact, repairing the frame and adding whats missing would give the package very good value. and quite doable by many of our members. As we are aware, simply transferring frame stamp, title and pillar plate to an already existing truck have harsh legal consequences. Worse comes to worse, a chunk of frame, a tag and the paperwork would make fabulous garage art! |

Re: Value or scrap?
It depends on the state because in VA they never even look at the truck...at all...ever...
I could theoretically have a truck with no vin plate, frame marking, etc....and if I have a valid va title, I can register it and drive it with no consequences until selling the vehicle to another state or if trying to claim an insurance claim possibly... That being said...I would never do that. I prefer to stay on the right side of the law But I personally would consider a cab swap and have completed a frame swap on a past truck and there have been countless cab and frame swaps completed (and documented) on this forum over the life of this forum. I also know that many people over the years took the vin plates off to paint behind them and they are now installed with non-correct rivets....this is an issue in some states even though nothing on the truck may have ever been changed other than paint....and this could have been done years ago before this law was in place also... In a state where they closely monitor these things, I wouldn't take the risk of building a vehicle only to find it wasn't sellable...

Re: Value or scrap?
Some good info Powerdriver posted up
specifically mentions in Michigan and Missouri it's illegal to swap cabs/vins or to even posess a vin tag or even rosette rivets for that matter..... Quote:

Re: Value or scrap?
Great post VA72C10 and most states have such laws, as does Washington.
We, as collectors, should be glad those laws exist. |

Re: Value or scrap?
They are getting real picky around here when scrapping, so they may ask for the title when I toss the frame. Ill just let it go.
